Thanks Stacey, my mom and I both need those positive thoughts and calming vibes. I've been reading up on it and it does make me feel better. It helps me to understand what the Dr. are telling me and helps me to ask more informed questions....I want to be involved in my treatment not just a bystander! It is after all my body. I'm worried about my mom but she is tough like me so she will be fine. I just have to keep her from over-doing it.All this and I have no car, it's still at the dealer. I have to have my mom drive me around to work. My stupid dealer won't give me a free rental car and I sure can't afford one now. Oh well, I would still have her take me to Dr. appointments to help calm my nerves.Trying to be calm and think

I was thinking the same thing about your ankle, the steroids may finally get rid of the inflammation! I'm generally pretty anti-drug, but sometimes you just need what you need!Donna

I am so sorry to hear all this very difficult news. I know it must be very upsetting to you. Certainly, you are in my prayers for healing and quick at that. Regarding steroids and weight gain, if it is water weight than that is very temporary. I have known many people (through WW and my own DH) who have had to do steroid treatments and did NOT gain weight. Many others use it as an excuse to eat larger quantities than they normally do (it can increase appetite I think but am no expert on steroids) thinking they're going to gain weight anyway, so why not (I adopted that attitude when I was pregnant with Miriam and the why not was about 40 or 50 pounds extra it took me years to get rid of!). If you seem more hungry, eat but try to stick to healthy foods like whole wheat, fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. If you do have increased thirst, I'd drink. It seems like it would be healthier to do so, and just know that if you

gain it is more likely water than anything else and will go away soon after the treatment is finished as long as your eating doesn't get out of control.

BAD news about my eye

Well, I thought I had an eye infection but it turned out that I just had my second confirmed bout of Optic Neuritis, which has caused me to lose the vision in my right eye (my good eye!) Optic Neuritis is inflammation of the Optic nerve. This basically means that my eye can see but its messages to my brain aren't arriving because my optic nerve is inflamed. The Ophthalmologist I went to said that I had central vision blindness, which means I can't see what is straight ahead (it's very dark/dim so I can't make out any details) but I can see a little of what is around me. Really though I can make out shapes but everything is gray or black, At the Dr. office I couldn't even see the eye chart! I only saw a black box with what looked like a dark gray box inside of it, that's it. My vision will come back though but it will take time and it varies on how good

I will be able to see out of that eye. My Ophthalmologist isn't concerned about it happening again but they are my eyes and I need them to work and do the things I love to do. I would definitely rather be Deaf than Blind especially

now since I have so many connections/ friends in the Deaf community. I'm not saying that I will go blind from this episode but I am very concerned about it since it has now affected my right eye (good eye.) The specialist Ophthalmologist I saw today recommended steroids as a treatment to reduce the inflammation in my optic nerve and speed up returning my vision. I've decided to agree to the steroid treatment. I will have 3 days of IV steroids and 10 days of oral steroids. I hope it works and I get my vision back FAST! I asked the Dr. what I should do to keep from gaining a lot and he told me to limit liquids because steroids cause water weight gain and to eat healthy. I was on prednisone for about a week and didn't gain weight.  An i.v. though - wow that's serious stuff!  I really hope you get big benefits from it, Jen!  It helped me a LOT!!Hugs

Yea, IV's are serious stuff and I will have to be there for about 4 hours, 3 of which will be watching the IV drip drip drip. I plan to bring something to read or listen to so I won't be too bored. I just hope that they don't have to do a PICC Line, I would rather just have a new IV for each of the 3 days. And yep the Dr. said IV steroids cause weight gain through water retention but I'm going to resist over-eating. It will be nice to have an appetite though since I haven't had one in a LONG time! Yea, IV's are serious stuff and I will have to be there for about 4 hours, 3 of which will be watching the IV drip drip drip. I plan to bring something to read or listen to so I won't be too bored. I took steroids while I was battling a long term illness. They do have some side effects but I found the benefits out weighted them. I recovered faster and felt better within days of taking them. I've been off of them now about 5 months, and the side effects have all gone away so even if you do have water gain it should leave as soon as your healed and off of them.

Water retention, at least, is very temporary. Can you bring a laptop? They might have wifi? I sat with DH when he was getting an iron infusion for several hours and was able to play on my laptop.

I will pray for your speedy recovery Jen. I have to go on and off steroids wuite

a bit too. The only advise I have to give is DRINK lots of water. It actually

helps fill you up. Water won't make you retain more water - and I have to wonder

about that doc's advise. The other thing is to keep lots of fresh vut veggies on

hand like bell peppers and cauliflower for when the munchies hit.

I took steroids while I was battling a long term illness. They do have some side effects but I found the benefits out weighted them. I recovered faster and felt better within days of taking them. I've been off of them now about 5 months, and the side effects have all gone away so even if you do have water gain it should leave as soon as your healed and off of them.
