Guest guest
Goodmorning Carole: I work for Publix Supermarket, no more than 20 hours a week. The bosses know I'm ill, they just don't understand the nature of the problem. Needless to say, they allow me time to sit when I need it and they are very caring when I'm not doing well. I'm a cashier, by the way, so sitting during work is not possible. You need to be careful of a few things when it comes to disability. 1) you can't make more than (I believe) $800 a month for the first 6 months and then it goes to $650 per month. Otherwise, SSI/D will take the difference and question whether you're capable of " gainful " employment. 2) Keep your pay rate under $10 an hour if possible or take less hours. To be honest, it's almost not worth working unless your job is close to home. 3) If you have dependents and you list them on the SSI/D they will recieve half of what you get. That money is then available to you for their care. Example: My son is now 14 years old, and gets half of what I do. I use that money for school supplies, the electric bill, clothes for him, computer equipment that he needs, etc. You get the idea. Once a year I have to let SSI/D know if I've saved anything for him (we'll talk about that another time) and that's it. It is possible to work to suppliment what you're getting. The long and short of it? Just be careful! Take care and be well. Ellen P.S. by the way, I'm in Palm City, FL. Every state has different rules.
