Guest guest
This did happen to Madison once. It happened because her rotation was being corrected though. Did her rotation improve with this new cast? pgboukidis wrote: My daughter Meredith was a patient of Dr. D''s in Philadelphia. Dr. D' applied Meredith's first cast in February 2007 and got her curve down from 32 to 15. When it was time for Meredith to get recasted she had an awful chest cold and could not be put under anesthesia. Dr. D' thought we could just wrap her in a cast so that she would not progress while she was getting over her cold. I basically held her arms up and she casted her. She then took an x-ray and her curve was 20. We went back in in May and her out of cast curve was down to 11 (only out of cast for 2 hours). Dr. D' casted her and told me it wasn't necessary to do an in cast x-ray and that we no longer needed to come to Philadelphia for treatment. We were told to go home and get a brace after she came out of this cast. I requested an in cast x-ray and they did it for me. When I got home, I called Dr. D' and asked her to measure it. She told me that Meredith's cobb was 11 and RVAD was 22. I asked to come back to Philadelphia but she insisted that Meredith was fine. Anyway, I followed my gut and made an appointment with Dr. in Erie. We just got back from Erie a couple of days ago. When she came out of this last cast she looked worse to me and sure enough her curve had gone from 11 degrees in May to 25 degrees out of cast last week. The minute she came out of the cast I knew she looked worse than before. She was worse when she came out of the cast than when she went into it. I didn't know if anyone else had this happen. I thought it wasn't possible for this to happen if the cast was applied properly. How could she go into the cast at 11 and come out at 25? Anyway, I'm so grateful that I had the appointment and that she was casted without any delay. Guest guest
My son is 10 and has been in a back brace since 2 1/2, not casted for a lengthy period of time, but I imagine there may be similarities... (I wish I knew about some of the newer procedures when he was a baby!) He was 44 and 39 when he was 1st diagnosed. He has had back braces for the 7 1/2 years! Wow, time flies! I think it was last year...When they casted Connor for the back brace it appeared to be good cast and subsequent brace, but after several months in that brace his curve went from the 20's to mid 40's. It was actually worse in the brace then out of the brace. I believe it had something to do with the original casting of the brace and pressure on the wrong part of his curve and possibly a growth spurt. So those two combined didn't correct the curve but made it worse. Good job tte for listening to your gut!! Just know that the curve can go up and down up to 5 degrees (I believe) if they aren't measuring it at the same point each time that can add degrees too! Didn't two different people measure? It sounds like you are doing a great job with the follow up. Connor's curves have been better and worse throughout the his scoliosis years. Not sure why...He has been up and down! Connor has not had any surgeries, as of yet, and we are hoping to avoid it all together. His curve started at 44/39 and has been as high as 56/49 and last year was 19/15. I can see that there is some rotation when you look at his back and I have a feeling his curve is worse...we'll see. He is still very flexible and we seem to get good correction with the brace. I'm nervous about the rotation and the curve. He goes to Shriner's in SLC or tele-medicine clinics, etc. Anything new for 10 year olds?? Let me know and Thanks a bunch! Guest guest
I can't answer your question, I do know that it does happen. Was her rotation addressed? Sometimes it seemed Evan's COBB went down adn the RVAD went up and then another time his RVAD went down and the COBB increased very slightly. So sorry to hear the numbers went up, but just wait and see how she is after this cast. Glad Dr.SAnders worked her in. Guest guest
tte, I am so sorry to hear about your roller coaster. I don't know why Dr D' decided to stop casting. Dr. Khoury has always told me to continue casting until the child gets to 5 degrees cobb and virtually no rotation or RVAD UNLESS the child has seemed to stop gsaining ground for a few casts in a row. Why stop when the child still improving? As far as the brace goes, in Erie the brace molds are made while the child is on the traction table or from a previous cast so the rotation can continue to be addressed. So I am again surprised she sent you elsewhere to get the brace fitted. Well, Dr. is great. Hopefully Meredith is on the road to recovery again. He will take good care of her. Have you talked to Dr. D' about all this? Keep us posted. /Cole pgboukidis wrote: My daughter Meredith was a patient of Dr. D''s in Philadelphia. Guest guest
Meredith's rotation went from 22 in May to 11 last week in Erie which we were very happy about. I guess my major concern was that when she was put in the cast in May her cobb was 11 and right when she came out of it last week she was 25. I didn't understand how it could get worse while she was in the cast. The amazing thing was that in the cast she had applied in April when she had her chest cold (not in traction) she actually improved. To be honest, what was more frustrating to me than Meredith's curve going up again was that we were sent home to brace without her doctor following through to make sure she was ready for that. But we are so pleased in Erie. Dr. got her cobb down to 10 and her RVAD to 9 in the cast last week. Hopefully we are back on track. Thanks for everyone's feedback! tte and Meredith (19 months) ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour
Guest guest
Was she placed in traction for the cast where she was not sedated? If she was not put in traction using the AMIL table, perhaps that is why she got worse? Ditto what said about casting until 5 degrees too. I know Dr. K said that he had a few patients get worse after moving to a brace too soon, so he now waits until 5 degrees to brace. Our process was the same as for the cast with being sedated and going through the whole cast process and then having the brace made from that mold.
