Hi Tina,

Have you been able to read " Growth as a Corrective Force in the Early Treatment

of Progressive Infantile Scoliosis, " by Mehta? If not, it can be found in the

FILES section of this group. In this article there is a photo of child in a

properly applied POP (Plaster of Paris) jacket/ cast. I would recommend copying

the article and taking it with you to the appt. That way you can find out

exactly what the differences might be. Ask the doctor if similar windows will

be trimmed out of the cast (front & back). Ask if the jacket will be made of

plaster, and covered with a light layer of fiberglass. Ask if that facility has

a size appropriate casting frame, that can correct the scoliosis

3-dimensionally. Ask the doc to measure Sophias RVAD (Rib Vertebral Angle

Degree).

Early Treatment casting is similar to Risser, but a little more specialized, and

can make a significant difference in the correction your daughter achieves.

The dvd is on its way.

I just woke up, so I hope this makes sense. Can anyone else think of anything

that I may have forgotten to add? If so, please chime in.

Sincerely,

HRH

Type of casting- Mehta vs Risser

Hello,

My daughter Sophia has a 40 degree curve now at 7 months old and we are

looking at treatment options (progressive infantile idiopathic scoliosis). What

is the difference between Mehta casting method and Risser casting? We were told

to see Dr. at Erie, PA Shriners for Mehta casting, but also found out

Dr. Crawford at Cincinnati Children's Hospital does Risser casting. Since we

never got a call back from Jane at Erie, we got an appt at Cincinnati (we

live in Indianapolis- so much closer). Out appt is tomorrow but if they do not

offer the same quality of treatment, I am prepared to pursue the Erie, PA route.

Any information would be greatly appreciated, or if anyone has experience with

Dr. Crawford in Cincinnati. Thanks so much!

Tina
