Guest guest
Hi! My mom wants me to make her a menopause cream with wild yam; wow I'm not a chemist. I'm thinking of using other extracts too like Chaste Tree, Licorice Root and Dong Quai, but don't have an idea of where can I find or learn about how to calculate concentration rates in extracts and how much the cream should have of the active ingredients, in order to be effective. I know this is serious stuff but does someone have any clues? Thank you in advance for any ideas. Cardona Blue Sunsets
Guest guest
, it kind of depends upon what your goals are here. Wild yam has gottena reputation as being a substance to be used for menopause because it supposedly contains progesterone. Actually yam does not contain progesterone, it does contain diosgenin which can be used in the lab to easily make progesterone from. So the creams that advertise they contain wild yam progesterone actually contain a synthetic progesterone that is added to them - very different from the advertised 'natural progesterone' they would like you to think. Also, most of the information about using progesterone for menopause came from a book by Dr. Lee which IMHO contains no medical or scientific value. As far as phytoestrogens (from herbs) are concerned there is both evidence for and against their use in menopause. I don't know if they would have enough of an effect when absorbed through the skin in a cream though - but it might be worth trying just for skin appearance. But since they are herbs, there is no calculating concentrations of phytoestrogens since they will differ greatly. High doses of phytoestrogens unfortunately may have a similar effect on increasing risk of breast cancer as does hormone replacement therapy. The answer to that is not yet known for sure though. I'd suggest increasing consumption of soy and drinking some (not alot) of teas from the herbs you mention.
