Guest guest
Jen, Thank you for sharing your experiences. I am glad your son's spine has done well with the brace. I have heard that swimming helps tremendously for the spine. I can't wait for to wear a brace and be able to enjoy water. At what degree is your son's curve these days? Casting is all we know at this point. I still feel could achieve more correction if casting was continued. We had success with his first 2 casts and then basically nothing. Right now I feel it is time to move on.............as in change doctors. Ms. Mehta's techniques and the AMIL frame have proven to help young children. deserves to be one of those children. Our doctor now is not Mehta trained. Again thanks for sharing. I wonder if he thinks this is all the better it can get? Regardless...in the last 8 years my son's curve (without casting and with wearing a TLSO brace and other non-traditional things) his curve has been as high at 59 and 53 degrees and as low as 19 and 15 degress. He was 2 when diagnosed and is now 10 years old and 5 feet 5 inches tall, so there has been a bunch of growth. If there wasn't any improvement maybe take a short break...have him swim, swim and swim some more...lessons, etc. Then maybe try and cast him again to see if you can get more correction. Playing in the water, held his 1st ice cream cones and Popsicles!! He and his brother had a blast. And then they enjoyed a REAL bubble bath. And I loved the cast free hugs. His little back " looked " great. His rib hump is almost gone. A normal person would not have even notice it. Thursday we went back to have his 6th cast applied. Much to my surprise they also made a mold for a brace that he will start wearing September 11. So he will be in this cast for 6 weeks. ???? I knew there was a chance, but didn't think it was time. Especially after seeing the out of cast Xray from Wednesday. Of course it looks better from when he first started, but it was measured at 20 degrees. Is it just me or is it too soon to start bracing? Shouldn't it be a lower number? The past 3 casts has stayed the same. No improvement. Just basically held his curve. His doctor feels at his age, 27 months, he has improved as much as he will and the cast will not do any more. He stated that if his spine got worse in the brace we may have to cast for a while, brace for while and go back and forth. Once he starts wearing the brace he would not be seen for 6 months. Is that a really long time not to check on his spine? Back in March Dr. looked at all of 's films and felt like we were getting good results. Should I again have him look at the most recent films and give me his opinion? Would he do that again? Is it too late for the cast to continue to give correction? Some of you know my highs and lows with his doc. I felt much better after Dr. looked everything over, but now starting a brace I am very scared. I don't want to lose what we have achieved by putting him in a brace too soon. Has anyone had experience with bracing too soon? ANY thoughts would be very helpful. Guest guest
Hi Tasha: You're welcome, as I've said before...I wish this were available when he was 2! Maybe it was, I just couldn't find the information. I would change and try the casting again. When we haven't had very good correction, I've found that it was related to the cast which was used to make the brace. If Connor is still flexible at 10, certainly you can get more correction at 2!!! Go for it!! We went a year ago and it was the lowest it's ever been at under 20 degrees (both curves and one was close to 10!). The last time we went it was back near the 40's again. Yikes, I knew it wasn't as good. I was feeling his back yesterday and think that he has more rotation than he did before. I'm a little nervous about our next visit. Can they do the Mehta cast when they are 10? He still flexible or am I being nutty?? Good luck and keep me posted. Jen Mom of Connor...tall and curvy for a boy (hee hee). You could always contact . I know she is traveling right now so it may take her a few days to respond. Maybe someone else will help us out on this. Where do you go now for Connor's treatment? Guest guest
I have read in one of Ms.Mehta's articles (I think it is linked to this group) about her casting style with older children. I don't know of anyone who does it though. There are alot of factors like flexiblity and if the child is currently in a growth spurt that can be harnessed. It is very interesting though. I guess you would have to contact an pedi ortho who could answer those questions and be willing to do the treatment.
Shellie Tasha Fontenot wrote: Jen, I am not sure about casting in older children, but hopefully someone with an older child will chime in. You could always contact . I know she is traveling right now so it may take her a few days to respond. Maybe someone else will help us out on this. Where do you go now for Connor's treatment? Much to my surprise they also made a mold for a brace that he will start wearing September 11. So he will be in this cast for 6 weeks. ???? I knew there was a chance, but didn't think it was time. Guest guest
Hi Tasha, It would be interesting to hear what another doctor would say about his most current films. Erie has been trained to do the Mehta technique, but they do not do over the shoulder casts which address rotation and keep from squeezing the chest cavity so much. I think told me that statistically Salt Lake is still getting the best results because they follow Miss Mehta's technique the closest. When did begin casting? I think someone mentioned that the age at which they first cast is the duration of casting they will need? The older they are when they get started, the longer they will need the casts. Anyhow, don't know if this was helpful. Please let us know what you decide. We will be praying. Guest guest
Just chiming in to say that yes, the under the arm casts do address the rotation. Ian started at 45 degrees of rotation and his rotation is now nil and he always had an under the arm cast. Dr. K had told me that the over the shoulder cast is necessary depending on where the apex of the curve is...Ian's apex never required the over the shoulder type. I know in SLC they always do the over the shoulder though. Noelle (12-2-01) Ian (8-15-04) Re: 6th cast/brace? Too soon I think?? Guest guest
tte, I will have to go back and read the article. I found it in the articles or files section of the CAST group. I think it depends on where the rotation is. If it is a lumbar curve, it might, but you also still have the fact that to make an under arm cast they have to put more plaster on and wrap it tighter which can compress the chest cavity and the lungs, even with the windows cut out. That is why Miss Mehta makes her casts over the shoulders.
