Dear ,

I have a nine year old daughter with OCD and ADHD. The OCD is the

worse problem until we get it under control and then we face the ADHD

nightmare. The meds she takes for OCD make her attention problems much worse,

but she really can't function without them (yet). I wonder whether you have

the same experience? Anyway, what we are using now is a new drug called

Provigil, which is mainly a narcolepsy drug. It is an non-amphetamine

stimulant. It doesn't have most of the side effects of the other ADHD drugs

and was prescribed for Annie because her pdoc worried that Ritalin or

Adderall might just increase her anxiety. She is already VERY keyed up and

tense all the time. We haven't tried the other meds but I have to say that

Provigil is quite effective and we have seen no side effects. Her school work

improved and her teacher questionnaires went steadily toward improvement

after we started her on it. It's no miracle - she still has days when she

drives everyone, including herself crazy with her spaciness and inability to

concentrate, but it's definetly an improvement. We may try Adderall one of

these days, but I don't want to switch any meds for a while. I'm just looking

for a little stability!!

I hope this helps a little. I can certainly sympathize with what you

are dealing with!!

Dear ,

Don't you just LOVE trying to tease out whether your child's latest

difficulties are from OCD, medication, ADHD or just normal kid stuff????

Annie has lately been cracking her knuckles A LOT and in therapy last week

she mentioned that yes, she does even up the cracking and yes, it is an OCD

thing. So then I asked her whether she thought about it at school (hmmm -

could this be why these last few weeks have been academic nightmares?). " yes,

some days I don't think about anything else. Should I crack them? If I

cracked one, should I crack the other? Did I just crack them both evenly,

etc. "

Sigh. It's amazing to me that these kids make it through life as

well as they do.

Hello everyone. I post every now and then. My 6 year old has OCD

and ADHD. Right now she is only on Zoloft 50 mg for the OCD, however

we are getting to the point where I really feel she needs something

for the ADHD. She is very hard to manage. Anyone have a child with

a similar situation and what do they take for their disease?

Hi , My son Tommy, now 8 1/2 takes Prozac and Buspar for his OCD

related symptoms and Concerta (12 hr. methylphenidate) for his AD/HD symptoms.

We have tried all of the other stimulants that are prescribed for AD/HD and so

far Concerta has worked the best for my son Even with these meds he is at

times, very difficult to manage and continues to experience difficulty at

school, especially if the accommodations in his IEP are not met to the letter!

Lately, he has been haveing more difficulty at school and we are in the process

of trying to decide if his increased hyperactivity/impulsiveness/inattention is

in fact related to his anxiety or AD/HD. He often gets so hyperactive and

impulsive that he gets literally out of control and presents a safety issue to

himself and sometimes others. Just today he got overstimulated at a church

school class and ended up kicking 2 adults before they got me out of the service

to come to him! It is also a known fact that sometimes the SSRI's can cause

more hyperactivity/inattentiveness/impulsivity in the kids who need to take them

for OCD and related disorders. To speak to what mentioned, Provigil

sounds like it may be a good med for kids who become hyper on SSRI's although my

son's Dr. has not decided that it would be a good drug for Tommy yet. I tend to

try new meds during periods when my son is not in school, although when I have

been at wits end, I have gone ahead and ried a new one here or there. You may

decide to try a stimulant on a weekend so that your daughter won't have to go to

school right after taking a new medication that possibly might not agree with

her. A good web site to visit for information on AD/HD is the CHADD web site.
