Peggy,

Although not toiletries, I use sandalwood powder to make incense cones and

scented herbal beads.

It makes wonderful sachets- alone, or when mixed with other botanicals and

helps to hold fragrances (as a fixative).

Reading 's post, I'd like to point out that there are two different

plants that are sometimes called sandalwood.

True Sandalwood (Santalum album) is where the essential oil comes from. It

is yellow in color, and the fragrance of the wood itself is rich and exotic.

The red powder (Pterocarpus santalinus) is most often called Santal or red

Sandalwood, has a vaguely similar scent, and is quite a bit less expensive.

The red one would be the one used for coloring, right?

Sandlewood turns a nice shade of maroon/burgandy in cp, I have used it for

swirls as well. I only use essential oils for color and they don't mutate

the sandlewood but I do know that different synthetic fragrance oils will.

The shade of maroon/burgandy will depend on the amount you use. The more

you use, the darker the color. I use up to a 1/8 cup in 10lbs of soap for a

dark color.
