,

I think this is so interesting. Matson was always a terrible sleeper,

would only sleep well in his swing, and his reflux was bad so we had

him sleep in his bouncy seat at night. It was hard to get him

transitioned to his crib, but we finally did at about 6 months. Still

he was up several times a night up until 9 mos old. But I always

wondered if this somehow " influenced " or at the very least

exacerbated his scoliosis. It seems as though a lot of our kids were

in seats to sleep due to other issues. Ya wonder if the scoliosis

somehow influenced the other issues or vice versa! Our older son

spent a lot of time in his swing as well, but always slept in his

crib at night and our little girl has enjoyed her swing too, but

neither one of them have any sign of scoliosis. Interesting poll!

Hi! I just wanted to comment on this poll's results so far. Wow! I

can't believe that 76% responded that their baby spent most of their

sleep-time in their " seat " for longer than 4 months! (My slept

exclusively in her carseat for 9 months).

I think this can help us in 2 ways:

1) We can all know that we are not alone with our feelings.

Personally, I felt very guilty (and still do a little) for allowing

to sleep in her carseat for so long (even though she LOVED it

and we did try to get her to sleep out of it). But I know in my heart

that I am a good mommy and I did what I did because I thought I was

doing the BEST thing for her and our family (she also had reflux, and

doctors actually ADVISED me to let her sleep in her carseat).

The ironic thing is that I used to almost boast to others about how

convenient it was that she slept in her carseat ( " we can take

her " bed " everywhere we go! " ). But, of course, now I feel bad about

it and almost embarrassed. Maybe I would feel a little different if I

had let her sleep in her SWING, since that seems to be a little more

commonly done, but since it was her carseat, I feel almost " stupid " .

But I'm not beating myself up...like I said, we did it with her best

interest in mind.

2) Maybe this poll could help to educate the medical community about

the possibility that spending extended periods of time in

these " seats " can POSSIBLY aggrevate a baby's spine. Maybe some doctor

(s) could do a research study on it or something.

Anyway! I just wanted to comment on this poll. I find it VERY

interesting and I'm surprised that some of you have said your doctors

have told you that sleeping in their " seat " didn't have any effect on

their scoliosis.

But mostly, I'm just glad to know that I'm not alone on this. Thanks

so much for voting in the poll. Have a great day...God bless you and

your babes.

Great e-mail. I am also alarmed by the Poll thus far. I asked two different

doctors and I got two different answers about a possible cause for Infantile

Scoliosis (IS) and sleeping in a swing. The first Pediatrician said that a

" swing " could NOT have caused my son's IS. Even though he exclusively slept in

it for 6 months. Then the 2nd Pediatrician said possibly. So now I am as

confused and angry as most of you. I looked at the warnings on both our swing

and car seat and nothing is mentioned about the risks of prolonged use and

spinal growth problems. I definitely think we need to contact The American

Academy of Pediatrics to see how a Epidemiological study can be done on a larger

scale to see if this has any merit, and if so, the medical community needs to be

educated (as a consensus) as well as warning labels on all car seats, swings,

bouncy chairs, etc. I am also struggling with guilt, but am focusing on the

future and want this not to become an epidemic of babies

with Infantile Scoliosis if proper research and education can be done.

I find this very interesting. My nine year old had colic problems

when she was little and would only sleep in her swing till she

outgrew it. She does not have scoliosis, but then my 20month old son

had horrible reflux and slept in his car seat and swing until he was

about 10months old. He has scoliosis and chiari malformation. We were

told to try and prop him when he slept so the reflux wouldn't be so

bad. We didn't notice the scoliosis until he was 14months.

In the UK they advise you not to let your baby sleep in car seats and that they

should only be for transporting your baby, with my first 2 they slept all the

time in their car seats until fairly old and have no problems but with Fraser he

never slept in his car seat or swing as he didn't like them and he is the one

with scoliosis. I have read lots of postings on here and have been learning all

the time about scoliosis, I can relate to lots of parents with differing

problems their kids have but to me there doesn't seem to be any overall reason

for this disease, it is very frustrating.

Isabella did not like sleeping in her crib, so I purchased a swing

from one of my girlfriends. Her son slept in it too. I will have to

confirm with her how long he slept in it, but I want to say 6 months.

I also know that when he was first born, he slept in his carseat.

Isabella slept in the swing for 9 months before transitioning to her

crib. She just wouldn't sleep in her crib so we did what we needed to

do to get some rest for all of us. Either way, my girlfriend's son

does not have scoliosis. Our children used the same swing and slept in

the same position. Sleeping in a swing or carseat might possible

aggrivate or worsen the scoliosis, but in our case, it was not the

cause.

I hope everyone has a great 4th of July.
