My son has also been suspended on multiple occasions for doing weird stuff,

also including bringing a knife to school in his backpack for " protection "

from a bully on the bus and also telling his friends about it. Kids with

these disorders are very prone to suspension-inviting activities. I find

the pending legislation concerning.

Re: Suspensions and IDEA

My daughter was suspended from school in 5th grade for taking a paring

knife

to school concealed in a pocket of her cargo pants. Unfortunately she

showed

it to another child on the playground and said it was " for protection " .

The

other child told the teacher and a suspension resulted. When I asked her

about it, she said she " forgot " it was in her pants.(unanswered question:

what was it doing in her pants in the first place?) Despite her IEP and

status as a special education student, she was suspended. The only

protection her IEP gives her is that she can't be suspended for more than

10

days without an IEP review, manifestation hearing, etc. Nowadays, if she

is

suspended for any reason, I demand an IEP review. And document, document,

document.
