Guest guest Posted December 26, 2001 Report Share Posted December 26, 2001 Hi , The confusing thing about BDD in a teenage girl is wondering to what extent it is part of the normal anxiety regarding all the bodily/hormonal changes, dealing with the extra scrutiny that is truly present among that age group ( is in 8th grade), and feeling insecure if one doesn't look like a magazine picture. I believe has rituals though, that supposedly are attempts to keep her skin looking better, but are really irrational, so I connect it with BDD/OCD. Shaving is one of her things too, she goes through lots of razors. She would not leave her room today b/c she looks like a " lizard " i.e her skin (esp her face)is not smooth enough. Christmas is stressful for her b/c we have guests and she is off her routine, so she is doing the same that she did at Thanksgiving, not leaving the bedroom unless absolutely necessary, or until sometime after dinner. I hope the therapist (who does CBT and has treated OCD yea!) can get her to reveal a bit more. The first appt for is tomorrow (I've already met with her myself )and she is not thrilled about the idea. Other than that we've had a wonderfully relaxing Christmas (last year we moved on Dec 28th) -my first in years without a job lay-off, house on the market, traveling to another state, or caring for a new baby (though I love the new babies- feeling wistful lately b/c I think I am actually finished with babies, my youngest son is nearly weaned and now potty trained!)
