Yesterday my daughter and I were driving to a church Christmas party when

she turned to me and said, " I'm not going to have any kids. I want to adopt,

because I might have a kid with OCD and I don't want any kid to go through

what I have had to go through. "

She's 13, it breaks my heart.

Jay,

Did you respond that she would be the perfect parent with all of

her experience??? With leighs attention to lost or lonely animals,

she most likely would become a loving and attentive parent.

We tease tom that he has to be causious who he mixes his gene pool

with, but he knows its a gentle warning to obstain or have safe sex!!

hugs jay... she's just testing!

Hi Jay:

Hugs to you and L.!

This is a normal response. Has she read the booklet, " OCD and

Parenting? " Although it has the same name as this list it is about

people with OCD becoming parents.

I think talking to others with OCD about their joy in being parents

will help L. realize that we all give genes carrying various

liabilities to our kids. Just because she has OCD does not mean

her kids will have OCD. Giving her some stats on the risks will

help her put this in perspective and be ready not to give up having

biological children.

Also adopting kids is no guarantee they will not have OCD. Both

families with OCD kids I know in our town have adopted their beloved

OCDers. They were very glad to meet me because until then they had

blamed their being adoptive parents for causing OCD in their kids - go

figure.....

Take care, aloha, kathy (h)
