Sandy quick question & I am coming out I have been here for a while now, and fear and inequality have kept me in hiding, I have joined several groups but never say much, I live in Ohio I am a 29yr old stay @ hm mother to 6(3 boys 3 girls), wife to one and an Avon rep but I have a passion for crafts, an obsession actually, I made my first M & P soap over a year ago,but I grew up with lye soap the ugly brown kind with no shape My Mother use to say the burning meant it was clening:( she only made lye soap,I did not know that you could buy soap in the store untill I was older, nor did I know that it did not have to burn; LOL I can laugh now, anywho, I have a ? I have looked into insurance(this is not my first journey into business) so that was my second necessity. I want to do this one right,I need to know if EVERY PRODUCT that you sell has to be tested in a lab, I would welcome any other input as I am new but that is a major concern,I have done my research and even gotten in touch with a SCORE rep. but still I want to hear what the learned hands have to say, well thank you for listening to me, I hope to come out of the closet and perhaps even lend some advice,
Guest guest
Hello! Thanks for coming out of Lurkdom! This is a really wonderful list, so there's no need for a question to ever go unanswered. Unfortunately, I don't know about testing every product prior to selling it. It's my understanding that unless you're making a medical claim (reduces cellulite, softens skin, etc), you are not subject to scrutiny by the FDA. I am on a list with a chemist & will be happy to give you the name of the group if you want to email me privately tammy@ elementsbathandbody.com (not sure if I can post that here). I would think that the SCORE rep is going to be a tremendous asset to you! There is a member on another group I'm on that sells insurance through RLI, so email me privately about that, too & I'll try & get that info in the meantime. Remember, the only dumb questions are the ones that go unasked. ) Thanks for sharing! BTW, I'm in KY near Louisville, so maybe not far from you! Guest guest
Hi Tammy, welcome! My thought is that aside from FDA stuff, you want to have tested those products that are formulated with water in them such as lotions and such because you want to be sure you are blending and selling healthy products. Although not to be taken lightly and we fall under the same category of anyone else who makes or sells " cosmeceuticals " , the likelyhood of the FDA tracking down one of we little fish in such a huge pond is about as likely as being struck by lightening twice in one lifetime, only because they lack the manpower to do so and have a hard time keeping up with the even large manufacturers . Your concern should focus on the high water content products which are the most suseptable to molds and other cooties. on this group is who I would recommend, from Sagescript Institute who does microbioligical tests on products for a very reasonable fee. When you make the claim that your soap as an example says " Healing Emu " it now becomes a cosmeceutical under the FDA guidelines instead of just soap because you called it healing. If you put " Hand-crafted soap with the healing properties of Emu " , it doesn't. I have to say that there are many interpretations to the guidelines and it is important to know and based on that I cannot recommend highly enough that you go to the FDA website and read all the information you can find....it's just too easy to overlook a detail and you don't want to make serious decisions on my opinion or anyone elses....that's just my humble opinion. You can also go to the Bomba Insurance web site, he has insurance for soapers and home blenders for $200 a year.
