Guest guest
WCAX - Burlington,VT http://www.wcax.com/Global/story.asp?S=5376040 & nav=4QcS MILTON, Vt. -- Town officials say a new Milton Elementary School could be needed eliminate the problems posed by mold in the existing building. Almost 90 workers are scrambling to remove mold from the building before classes resume Sept. 18, said Superintendent Holden Waterman. The school's Aug. 30 opening was delayed to give workers time to clean the building. " There is a possibility that due to the damage that's been done over the last 20 to 30 years, it's not possible to clean the rooms appropriately and rebuild as we'd like to. Therefore, a new structure would have to be built, " Waterman said. Tests will be conducted on the foundation of the school building to determine if water is seeping through the concrete. About 75 percent of the elementary school was found to be experiencing mold problems last month caused by excessive rain, humidity, poor ventilation and drainage and a leaky roof. Mold was found on walls, desks, carpets, books and other surfaces. " With the roof, we could have a roofer out there next week, but what kind of roof we want to put on there will be determined by the life of that building _ how long we plan to be in there, " said Waterman. The mold removal is on schedule. So far about 40 percent of the building has been cleaned, Waterman said. ___ Information from: The Burlington Free Press, http://www.burlingtonfreepress.com
