Weighing scales?

This could be seen as an extension from Dr Siff's Fitness Testing

Paradox.

Every gym has a pair of weighing scales and generally most

individuals seem to use these scales religiously (and some fitness

instructors rely on these as a measure of how effective their

training programmes are). Why?

One of the most extreme examples is an individual weighing themselves

before and after they work out in the hope that they have lost some

fat! It happens.

Weighing scales tell you very little about ones body composition so

why use them so ritually everyday - have I lost some weight yet?

In fact, I believe it is an over emphasised measure fuelled by the

dogma resulting in `crazy diets' and `mad training programmes' which

usually lead to either a deterioration in performance or illness

(overtraining) / lack of adherence.

Additionally it seems that great emphasis is placed on these 'magic

training programmes' as well. Shouldn't fitness instructors set more

realistic goals? Yes this training programme will help but you can

do other things outside of the gym to help yourself - take the

stairs, carry the shopping, walk to work, change ones eating habits

etc.

I welcome further thoughts and opinions
