That's interesting. What do they rent for, for a month?

I have had 2 docs suggest Hyberbaric Oxygen treatmen (HBOT) for sometime now.

The suggestion was made for both my MCS and chronic fatigue symptoms.

Last year I checked out a facility 20 minutes away from me that had the hard

high pressure chambers. They are very small and you have to lie down on a

gurney to be pushed into one. I have major claustrophobia and took one look at

those, had a panic attack and left!

One of my docs now has 5 soft zippered low pressure chambers in his office -

mainly to treat autistic kids. He really felt it was extremely important for me

to do this because he feels so strongly that they will help many of my symptoms

drastically - but it means about 150 dives (treatments) to get along lasting

benefit. I believe many people do not have success with HBOT because they do

not do it long enough.

Anyway, I tried one out and because of my claustrophobia, it was pretty rough

the first time. I had a truly major panic attack, but the three wonderful

Russian women who worked there calmed me down enough to get me to stay in for

one hour. I did pretty well the next 4 dives and even started to feel a bit

less fatigued. I even felt so secure that I thought my claustrophobia was

lessening. However, there was a new person helping me for the 5th dive and the

panic returned. One of the Russian women had to come back in the room and stay

with me to get me thru it. I didn't realize how important trust is for me in

this treatment.

My doc has a waiting list to rent the chambers for a month at a time. He feels

that several dives a day will help people more. And for me, he suggested taking

a tranquilizer or sleeping pill (to calm me down) and actually sleep in the

chamber. No way can I see myself doing that!

Anyway, the two caveats for HBOT are the cost and claustrophobia, if you have

it. Also, the pressure may effect your sinuses, so it can help to take a

sudafed before - if you can tolerate it. The soft chambers are bigger - so

claustrophobia is less of an issue. And if you can afford to pay around

$20,000, you can buy one of your own.

I am sticking with this treatment despite my claustrophobia, the cost and a one

hour drive to get there. I have been sick for a very long time and I want to

get better. BTW, I have been on CSM for over a year now and my only improvement

is no BO! My house is now mold free. And I have always felt better in my house

than anywhere else to begin with.

I'm a firm believer in buying when you can. I could take out a loan

because at least I would have an asset after purchase, instead of

expense, which you could perhaps resell later for $15k, if you felt

you could part with it but it might just be tip of the iceberg since

you'd have to get O2 also.

I don't know how much that costs but I bet that can be costly if

insurance won't pay for.

This may be sign of the time. A few years ago who would think many

people would be buying plain water, now dreaming about buying air!!

I don't know. This is just something special he is doing with his patients -

using his soft chambers.

Remember - this is not just air: it is pressurized oxygen.

Saralee,

How did you feel in soft chamber. It would seem

that developing proper pressure in a soft sided

chamber would not work. Did you think it seemed

affected? Perhaps it is 'oxygen tent', rather

than pressurized oxygen??? I know an naturopath

that uses oxygen tent, just wear a lightweight

gown, you breath in the oxygen and you can also

absorb through skin but it is not pressurized.

Just wondering if it could be like that.

I absolutely felt pressure. It is not a tent - it is a tube of firm material.

There is a wire form inside to support the chamber when it is blown up. The

first step is that the unit is zippered and then air blown in just to get

the form blown up to the proper size. Then the pressurized oxygen is added thru

a tube inside the chamber.

My doc uses 4 PSI, which is low pressure (mild) hyperbaric. Low pressure

and high pressure help in different ways. High pressure is 35 PSI.

Here is another doc's site that explains the difference:

http://www.hbotreatment.com/hyperbariccomparison.htm

Because of my MCS, I had to wait months before the material outgassed enough

for me to use the soft chamber safely.

This is my doc's HBOT site. Most of the articles regard HBOT and autism,

but some are specifically about the benefits of HBOT.

BTW, his practise used to consist mostly of adults, but in recent years he has

chosen to specialize in austism.

I am one of the few " special " adult patients that he has chosen to continue

to treat.

http://www.drneubrander.com/pageHBOT.html

He now also has one large hard chamber, which he reccomends using once every

few months. I'll have to take a look at it before I get my nerve up to use

it.

This is the site for the company that makes the soft chambers:

http://www.genoxinc.com/portablehyperbaric.htm. They even sell used ones. My

doc has the Vitaeris

chambers.

I hope this info helps.
