, ditto to what Donna said, especially the part about dumbells making your weaker side do the work and not just come along for the ride, and also more teeny tiny muscles fire to stablize it in your grip than with the barbell.If I could only have dumbells or a barbell set I'd pick the dumbells. However, I do prefer the barbell for certain things such as skull crushers, deadlifts, and pullovers. It was our crafty and frugal Miss Kassia who pointed me in the right direction for the barbell set. As much as I dislike shopping at Wallmart, that is where you can get a new barbell set for just $25. The weights are on the heavy side though, so you'll need to pick up some 2.5

lbs plates to add to the set, as 5lbs is as low as they go, in the set and for me I need the little guys for shoulders and also as an add on to other weight increments.You may want to check your Freecycle though. As with much exercise equipment, people seem to get rid of these. You can see them at garbage sales all the time.HTH,
