Guest guest
Sally, was this question for me? If so, I suspect gutbugs sometimes, reactions to some supplements other times. Lately I suspect seizures/ absences. The ups and downs manifest in terms of ‘what comes out’. It he doesn’t actually regress or lose skills but ‘disappears’ becomes withdrawn/ absent. He can also become very very very obsessed and his interests narrow. When he is good, he is happy and open and plays with lots of different things. Guest guest
You sound as if you've got it all sorted. I thought you were newer to everything. Have you become ABA trained for your son? Or is it something you used to do before? I don't know any mums either that do therapy with their own child. I used to manage to do a bit of it with ABA but now we do VB I never do any of it, perhaps I should - he is my only child. It's hard isn't it? I think it's cool that you know the limitations of your child's school but send him anyway. It shows it's a happy place for him to be and gives you a little break too. Guest guest
Hi Elaine We do a lot of naming and pointing as part of Tom's programme. We find the only way the words pop out is to take away the demand for them initially and do " point to " or " give me the " . Then what's been happening is that the word pops out on its own and we reinforce the trial twice. So he gets two clicks if he both points and says the word. He's also doing great at function although when you say " what's this? " he might say " kick the ball " rather than just " Ball " so perhaps we're going a bit fast for him. We use the language builder cards from difflearn.com which are ludicrously expensive $150 but have just made all the difference. They're quite robust so they've lasted being used sevearl times a day for six months. Some of the images are US which is complicated but they're almost all useful. We also use a programme called Picture This but it's such a faff printing out and laminating your own cards and drives me to despair. So I'm lazy and buy as many resources as possible. I also find with Google images the quality isnt good enough when you come to print them. Or perhaps thats my printer. Guest guest
Hi Steph, is doing really quite well on ABA now, but as you say, like your son, he learns receptively first. Don’t know if this is any use to you but have you tried with your functions v labelling to change the volume of the word that he needs to attend to eg WHAT’ S this? What do you DO with this (ball)? That really helped with functions. The other thing that helped with this was doing the following ‘You tell the TIME with a CLOCK’ ‘What do you tell the TIME with?’ Anyway probably sounds like absolute nonsense in an e-mail! ’s expressive language is really coming along (although I would like it to be better than it is, but who wouldn’t!) and written prompts which are faded quickly really help especially with pronunciation. really didn’t understand that ‘Can I have’ was three different words until we used the written prompt. He thought it was canihave. But I think that going back to the clicker would be great. On a final note let me tell you something lovely. loves pizza, but hasn’t had one for a long time because he is SCD and we were being careful with nuts. Anyway I made him one at the weekend and when he had finished he sat down opposite me and said mummy, mummy… I love you. I nearly burst out crying! Makes it all worth it. Guest guest
Oh wow. The last time my TOm said that he was 2 and a half. That really does make it all worth while (even by proxy!!) Yes, good tip on the emphasis. We're a bit guilty of trying to run before we can walk - we're so excited to hear his voice again after so long, and on a reliable basis that I'm practically chucking Shakespeare at him.... Guest guest
Steph, Aldi is selling flash cards in a spiral book this week. Good quality cards each book £1.99 covering a different subject - numbers, colours, shapes, addition, etc - these could be used as language builder cards. They are selling some preschool books and also Star Learning Diploma workbooks £1.39 covering many subjects 5-7 yrs and 6-8yrs. Worth checking out your local Aldi this week. Guest guest
I just ordered FlashPro 2 from www.aba-materials.com and it's great! I think someone here recommended it. There are over 10,000 images (who ever knew you might need 13 different pics of cows?) and you can select them to print different quantities per page from 1 to 8. I was looking at verb cards on DiffLearn and there is only one pic per action and the card sets are so expensive and aren't what we need (they didn't include hugging and kissing, shocking! such important things!) - so I just bought this CD. I think this should suffice for most needs. Some of the pics are seriously dated but that's not really that important, they are isolated nicely without backgrounds, conflicting information. They were obviously made by one family though as similar or same people appear in lots of them although they vary the ages, sex of the subjects. It costs about £45 I think. You still have to print and laminate but I guess you can't have everything in life you want, can ye? Oh, and I don't recommend searching Google images for body parts!!!!!! Yikes! (Either medical grotesque or porn, lol.) Darla OOh I love Aldi, thanks for the tip. There is a listing on Ebay currently for a language builder cd thatcontains over 1000 images to print off as photos. I've bought one -if it turns out to be good I'll post the sellers info.Steph x

Guest guest
>Re ABA /VB Got to say alot of this is perception compared to reality. VB vs ABA is not the issue: it's more about how flexible your provider is, how willing they are to treat the parent as a partner in dedicing the strategy and direction of your child's programme. Our provider UKYAP are a Lovaas replica site (implying they are very LOvaas oriented ) but they are totally receptive to our ideas and the programme is completely tailored to our child's deficits and strengths, not DTT sitting at a table, very play and language oriented and totally focused on generalisation, inferencing, social skills, etc. Our consultant has been working on the programme for 2 years and is absolutely astoundingly brilliant! The programme is VB/ABA - it's got to be because the foundation is the same - Skinner's 1930s behavioural science. Plus our lead tutor comes from a totally VBbackground and the programmes we are doing now and their delivery are EXACTLY what she does with other VB providers (like BIG) What you need is a provider with a 'broad church' approach which is not going to be too hung up about doctrines to take on board other methods and approaches. Just as there isn't a 'cookie cutter' approach to education or bio-meds, neither is there to ABA/VB. Your child is an individual- and you, as the child's parents should be working in partnership. Rhona > Hi again Gobika, > Are you doing VB or more of a Lovaas style therapy? > I don't know if you are asking this but you seem to be so here I go with my > personal opinion ... > VB is LOADS better than ABA.
