Guest guest
We’re doing VB and biomed with Tom aged 4 and 2 months. We started ABA when he was 2 and 8 months, switched to VB when he was 3 and 4 months. We went gf/ cf when he was 2 and 5 months and started real biomed when he was 3. He’s doing well but he’s a very up and down boy. Big ups and big downs. Often I look back and realise he was better months and months ago. We get a lot of wows too though. Are you doing both Gobika? SARA x combination of biomedical + ABA/VBA Hi All, Just wanting to know how many of you are doing the combination and how many doing just biomedical.or may be something else new. gobika __________________________________________________________ Get Hotmail, News, Sport and Entertainment from MSN on your mobile. http://www.msn.txt4content.com/ -- No virus found in this incoming message. Guest guest
yes sara, we are doing both.but started biomed at 3.5 and aba kind of same time.he was non verbal initially until 4years plus.started to say papa and baba to everything whenevr he wants something.but this came about 6-8 months ago.now he is 5 yrs.no further developement yet which is very dissapointing.recent urine analysis showed high levels of mercury and a bit of lead. so planning to continue with DMSA supps and other supplements.he is only getting ABA 10 hours a wk maximum as going to a special needs school during day time. thinking about doing ABA full time or something else.it is tough deciding what is working and where should you invest the money and time. gobika > >Reply-Autism Treatment ><Autism Treatment > >Subject: RE: combination of biomedical + ABA/VBA >Date: Wed, 21 Feb 2007 22:50:21 -0000 > >We’re doing VB and biomed with Tom aged 4 and 2 months. Guest guest
Hi again Gobika, Are you doing VB or more of a Lovaas style therapy? I don't know if you are asking this but you seem to be so here I go with my personal opinion ... VB is LOADS better than ABA. It is much more modern, more child-friendly and pushes for language above all else. As for special schools, there have been a lot of discussions about them recently on this forum and, although there are good ones out there, the general consensus seems to be that they are, at best, babysitting our children and, at worst, holding them back with low expectations, etc. (Apologies to those of you that have your kids at good special schools) They tend to use TEACCH which doesn't get our kids very far. As for deciding where to spend your money, it's a tough one. VB/ ABA are SOOOOO expensive. If you have the right consultant and therapists, and can get the enormous sums of money in the first place, VB is worth every penny. What other biomed do you do? We are not chelating yet. I would have to say that the biggest and consistent gains in ABA have been in conjunction with biomed. Guest guest
I know good schools are rare but there are some good schools. Tom's now uses a combination of Growing Minds/VB with NET and anything else that seems appropriate at that moment. I watched a DVD of Tom's one to one teacher with him yesterday and she was getting him to do things I've not managed (but ha ha the game is up TOm as I have the evidence!!). He was rote counting, matching the right first letter, naming, doing loads of switching from task to task, I could almost hear his brain exercising. I totally agree - don't assume that a special school is going to educate your child to maximise his or her potential just because they're " experts " but there ARE open minded and good autistic units and schools out there, they are just shamefully thin on the ground. We've managed to work in partnership with ours and they do a mixture of what they want and what we want. And they're using trials with some other kids now with good results. I also agree about VB - it's just been a transformation for Tom. The biomed got him more able to learn and then VB/Growing Minds/NET/DTT all gave him back the ability to speak. We're still single words mostly (apart from the occasional swearing and a recent " Look what I can do now! " ) Growing Minds advocates 1000 discrete trials per day - it's possible to do partly at school and mostly at home, it is apparently possible to get all these into one day, every day. We're currently at about 500, you don't get there overnight but once you absorb trials into every minute of the day " can you put that on the table? " click, " what colour is this cushion? " click, " choose a video " click, " who is this character " click it's so much easier than ABA and feels much less like learning to the child. IMHO. Guest guest
Hi Gobika, Elaine again. I know that sara finds VB much better and I have to agree that other parents have said the same to me. However we are a bit different. We started out doing ABA and after a couple of years switched to VB. But did not do as well with VB. The reason for this was that did not learn through the mand. His expressive language was so poor and difficult for him that he switched off (regardless of good the reinforcement was). His VB consultant agreed that he learned first receptively and then expressively and then the mand. So we swapped back to ABA and he is making many more gains. However in saying that we were never taught to do ABA sitting just at a table. It happens everywhere using masses of different reinforcers and generalisation techniques. A good ABA or VB consultant/supervisor should have you working with your child everywhere. He can now learn through the mand. On the subject of being a tutor yourself I have always been involved in teaching and it has only been in the last couple of years that I stopped taking whole sessions myself (although I am still involved). The reason for stopping was I totally burned. Anyway we are through that now and we are full on with his sessions now. has a session (if everything goes to plan on a daily basis) every evening, Monday to Friday, and 1 or 2 sessions on a Saturday. On a Sunday we are just glad to have the house to ourselves! We are also self funded. Guest guest
--Hi Elaine, it was recommended to us to use the clicker to get 500 -1000 mands /day! like many of our children my son has a stronger labelling repertoire and it was easier to quiz him ,ie what are you doing/what colour etc so its forced us to concentrate on skills that he is weaker on.nina .. Guest guest
The best resource I've found for VB related stuff is www.difflearn.com the Different Roads to learning site. It's US based and the postage is scary but the stuff is very carefully thought out. If you're placing an order there anyway it's worth buying clickers from them. If you're not you can buy clickers on Ebay. They are used for dog training among other things, about £8 each. There is also a good book about Discrete Trial Training and how to basically train humans (and I know how abhorrent taht sounds but when you read the book and how confirming good behaviour and laerning is the key, it's not at all abhorrent) It's called Dont' Shoot the Dog. You can get from Amazon and Ebay. I'ts not autism related - it's about behaviour and shaping it. > > > > > > Hi again Gobika, > > > Are you doing VB or more of a Lovaas style therapy? > > > I don't know if you are asking this but you seem to be so here I > go > > with my > > > personal opinion ... > > > VB is LOADS better than ABA. Guest guest
We had the same recommendation as you Nina and this was the real breakthrough for us between essentially non-verbal and now, very verbal (although not all that conversational yet). But what makes all our lives so difficult is that it seems something different will be the breakthrough for each child as you said Elaine, it took something totally different for your little boy. Clicking 800 a day for 800 mands nearly killed us at first. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and thank God hubby was still at home then. (He hasn’t left us, he works on a ship now!) Looking back I’m so proud he worked that hard. I could NEVER do it again. I think following Alison’s post on burnout, it’s important to channel energies as well as conserving them when necessary. Another thing I’m not good at!
