Thank you everyone for your kind comments about my Father, and Skwigg for

making me laugh...it had been a while. The old man turned the corner

finally on Monday. He¹s getting back to his old self, so with no

complications (fingers crossed) he¹ll be home next Friday. For the gal that

asked, he doesn¹t need a hip replacement, the ortho told me that I would

have broken my leg had I fell like he did. He¹s a Parkinson¹s patient too

and his feet froze on him and he went down hard.

Now for the bizarre news. I¹ve just been staying the course, working the

program but not fanatically. The week he fell I was planning on adding some

things to my routine to kick it up a notch before this big meet. He pretty

much torpedoed that plan. However, I lost six pounds this week and have no

explanation for it. I haven¹t done anything different. Well, the only

difference is that I picked a meal off of e-diets that consisted of lean

steak, brown rice, asparagus and honeydew. TJ¹s didn¹t have honeydew but

they did have watermelon so I got the watermelon. The other thing that was

different was that I went to an ART chiropractor, who really tore up my hip

flexors, which were really tight. Outside of that it was business as usual

this week. While I¹m perplexed, I¹m going to stay the course and skip my

free day, and maybe just have a dessert tonight and see how much I can build

on this.

I swear that watermelon is some kind of miraculous natural diuretic. I

don't remember who was talking about that last week, but I totally

agree. If you're retaining water and you eat a couple big pieces of

watermelon, you won't be retaining water anymore. Maybe the melon is

what tipped the scale for you.

That was me--I'm the watermelon fanatic. I've spent entire afternoons

doing practically nothing besides eat watermelon and pee. (Ahh, those

crazy days of summer.)

so watermelon isn't BAD for me? I had another group of BFL women tell me to stay

away from it cuz of it's " high glycemic value "

although I just heard from my mil that she read it has no nutritional value, no

vitamins etc. what a bummer! I love watermelon!

People who are afraid to eat fruit drive me nuts. I never, ever gain fat

when I'm eating lots of fruit. Au contraire, it usually takes a couple

of pounds off me, even when I'm eating enormous quantities. (Which I do

when I eat watermelon--I can eat 1/2 of a huge watermelon in an

afternoon; a couple watermelons a week when they're really good.)

Are you kidding? No fruit is bad for you. Watermelon is loaded with

vitamins, potassium and lycopene. Here it is on the World's Healthiest

Foods list:

http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice & dbid=31

Anybody who's been brainwashed by low carb diet books will be

terrified of watermelon - and bananas and carrots and potatoes and all

kinds of other healthy, nutrient-dense foods. Watermelon does have a

high-glycemic value, but because you're always eating it with protein,

that doesn't matter much. Besides, you want high-glycemic carbs post

workout. The little bit of an insulin bump helps to shuttle nutrients

into your muscles faster. That's the one time of day when it pays to

eat calorie-dense carbs like pasta, bananas, bagels, potatoes, etc..

If you were to finish your workout and eat a big leafy green garden

salad with grilled chicken and a big piece of watermelon, there's no

way that would be " bad " for you.
