Why did your doctor say you needed more protein? I won't attempt the kind of scientific explanation Jerry could give, or even the formal although superficial explanation I could give if I were more energetic. My GP gave me sort of an eight-year-old's explanation when I was quite ill and too tired to think well (not encephalopathic, exactly). She said my liver wasn't processing and distributing nutrients efficiently. Therefore, I needed more of everything -- especially protein for repairs. She was very gentle and spoke very slowly, bless her. Oddly, the night before seeing her I'd waked up laughing out loud, imagining myself as Lucille Ball on the chocolate factory assembly line, stuffing chocolates in her blouse, her apron, her cheeks. I told my doctor about the dream, and she said that was pretty much what my body was doing -- the food wasn't getting to the right destinations, and my body was stashing it away where ever it could -- such as behind my collarbones and on top of my wrists and on my belly and butt and bosom. Incidentally, I haven't lost a pound in the three years since then, but my GP says I look much more normal. Fortunately, I never got the usual "buffalo hump" of fat, and the moon face has greatly lessened.

A lot of us have had this problem with a changed voice; it's not your imagination. Again, I wish I were a little less lazy or had a better memory. I know I've looked it up and found a specific name for it. It seems to go away with time. Perhaps someone else remembers the term, or I can do some searching later. I can't remember whether it's due to hormonal changes with Prednisone or something else. At any rate, I can tell you you're far from unique -- in that particular respect, at least! Others have had trouble swallowing, incidentally.

Orleans to assist the mayor of St. Bernard Parrish at the request of

Hudson and I caught the Katrina cough even tho I was wearing a HEPA respirator

in the homes I inspected and tested?

Well, six weeks of coughing, while taking antibiotics, forced me to get

help from Dr. Shoemaker. After 5 days....not weeks.....just five days on the

CSM medication, and the cough went away. I am a big believer in getting to the

right doctor and getting properly treated.

You are right to point out the limitiations of HEPA. It is not an

absolute filter. Even if it were it is only part of the whole

mechanism we call a respirator. There are leaks around the edges of

most respirators - that is why the professionals must be fit tested.

Even then, the " fit " will leak as you move around, especially during

work for remediation or inspection.

Each class (type) of respirator has an Assigned Protection Factor

(APF). The APF of a filtering facepiece (simple dust mask), for

example, is 5, which means it reduces particles by a factor of 5. If

there are 50,000 spores per cubic meter of air, the facepiece will

reduce them to 10,000 inside the filter. A half-face is 10 and a full-

face is 50. So a full face will reduce 50,000 spores outside the

respirator to " only " 1,000 inside.

The best is the full-faced powered air-purifying respirator (PAPR)

but there is disagreement between the manufacturer and NIOSH as to

whether the APF is 1000 or 50, respectively.

Regardless of the details, there are no absolutes. Choose the minimum

that meets your needs so you don't waste money on the excess. On the

other hand, get as much protection as you can afford.
