EU is urged to press for global ban on mercury

Rory , Brussels

The first 150 words of the full text of this article appear below.

The European Union is being urged to campaign for a global ban on the

use of mercury, after a recent survey found that more than one in six

women had mercury concentrations above what is widely accepted as

safe.

The " Stay healthy, stop mercury " campaign, which is coordinated by

two pan-European non-governmental organisations—the Health and

Environment Alliance and Health Care Without Harm—examined mercury

concentrations in hair from more than 250 women aged between 18 and

45 years in 21 countries, mostly in Europe.

The groups present the findings in their latest report, which showed

that over 95% of the women tested had detectable concentrations of

mercury in their bodies. In 15% of the women the concentration was

above the most protective reference dose of 1 microgram per gram set

by the United States National Research Council, a concentration that

should not be exceeded in women of child bearing age.
