Guest guest
I hope somebody finds the Transporters DVD useful. We were in on the trial and I thought it was useless; H wasn't bothered, either.More research money down the drain, IMHO. But get your free DVD - it might be useful for your children. Margaret PS they only want post-evaluation comments from families with a child who is five or under and high-functioning - ie good language. What a con. > > Strangely both of my kids can read faces and tone of voice, they know when > someone is happy, sad or angry. > Typical the one autistic feature we dont have a problem with in here is the > one they are giving out free help with. > Vicky >
Guest guest
My boy reads faces as well. He knows when i am sad or angry and when others are not happy. He cries when others cry and he actually says " happy " or cry or sad to display how he is feeling. > > > > Strangely both of my kids can read faces and tone of voice, they > know when > > someone is happy, sad or angry. > > Typical the one autistic feature we dont have a problem with in > here is the > > one they are giving out free help with. > > Vicky > > >
Guest guest
I agree. I contacted them to say that we were better showing it to Ned who didn't have a diagnosis. They were " it's Tom or nothing " I then said but he's non verbal, low functioning (we then thought), etc etc. And they didn't know what to do with it - the information I mean. And Tom showed no interest whatsoever - in fact bored rigid (and he loves things like the Magic Key). Ned watched it once or twice and then he too was bored. So " great breakthrough for autistic children in recognising facial expressions " perhaps not but hopefully useful for subset of HFA who have problems with facial expressions in particular. I don't knock the intention but I hated the way they went about it. Some wet behind the ears researcher spoke to me as if I was such a nuisance for having an ASD child who didn't fit the SBC model. > > > > Strangely both of my kids can read faces and tone of voice, they > know when > > someone is happy, sad or angry. > > Typical the one autistic feature we dont have a problem with in > here is the > > one they are giving out free help with. > > Vicky > > >

Guest guest
a few things went through my mind reading these posts, the first was that isn't it logical that some of our children are able to read emotions and others not? isn't this why the spectrum is so wide, a bit like a spider's web and our children are anywhere on this web, depending where they are defines their strengths and their difficulties, my son right now is oblivious when I cry, ( like in Waitrose last week! LOL another one of those till situations, child lying on the floor and a million others watching) but it doesn't mean he wont get emotions at some point, this brings me to my other wee thought which was something I was discussing with a friend and that was that our kids have an entirely different developmental pattern which just hasn't been charted yet, the trick is to keep that focus where it should be, on the days I do my son is an absolute miracle and on the days I dont well, we all know what that is like, I probably said stuff you have all said already, sorry if I did, I ordered the emotions dvd too, was kind of thinking Fry wouldn't be involved in something crap, it did annoy me that they only wanted to hear from people whose kids had a good understanding of language though, worth saying something about, all my best to you all for 2007, Josie xxx > > > > Strangely both of my kids can read faces and tone of voice, they > know when > > someone is happy, sad or angry. > > Typical the one autistic feature we dont have a problem with in > here is the > > one they are giving out free help with. > > Vicky > > > > > > > -- > No virus found in this incoming message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.16.7/620 - Release Date: 08/01/ 2007 > 16:12 > > > > -- > No virus found in this outgoing message. > Checked by AVG Free Edition. > Version: 7.5.432 / Virus Database: 268.16.7/620 - Release Date: 08/01/ 2007 > 16:12 >
Guest guest
doesn't have too many difficulties reading expressions but he does avoid looking directly at your face, which I thought was visual distortion, unfortunately the link from Growing Minds is no longer available and that was good in that it had more images of positive emotions than negative. What he is trying to do at the moment is recreate facial emotions in front of a mirror which he struggles to do, ie he can do basic happy and sad but cross, angry, interested is more challenging so he uses his fingers to crease his brow or push his lips together. On HANDLE course they talked about this reflecting poor muscle tone - I think they called it flat aspect in facial and bodily communication. Anyhow I did apply for free DVD because it was free - but the clip on the web was not that inspiring. Although might just about fit the criteria for the research I said no as his receptive language is way better than his expressive so to a lay person they would struggle to test his apptitude etc. and SBC gets on nerves anyhow! PS Just bought a box set of Oxford Reading Tree stuff at COSTCO each stage has a book with a CD, flashcards and a toy floppy for £20. As they use ORT at his school I thought it would help get him more engaged. Also there is a tv series of the Magic Key stories on some obscure channel I think I will sky plus to further engage him in the characters. Anything is better than the tank > > > > Strangely both of my kids can read faces and tone of voice, they know > when > > someone is happy, sad or angry. > > Typical the one autistic feature we dont have a problem with in here > is the > > one they are giving out free help with. > > Vicky > > >
Guest guest
I spoke a while back to Ian Jordan about Visual Dyslexia/distortion. He was really friendly and suggested I wait before assessing as he was too young/unco-operative for him to give a reliable assessment. Apparently he practices in Cambridge and at the Breakspeare. His work is very interesting.
Guest guest
Hi I think if these DVD's help even a small percentage of children, or like you say, help re-enforce what they are learning naturally then the scheme will have been a success in my mind! Please give us more! I am always amazed at how much my lad picks up from the TV (Good and Bad!!!) and when he was 2 1/2 and had very little speach he learnt a lot from the Bee Wise Baby Bumble Bee DVD's (although he did speak with a canadian accent for a while!!!). I wouldnt have been without them, they even introduced concepts like opposites and numbers etc by using repetition, they worked wonders on my son. He does have a good recognition of emotions but I am hoping it will help to re-enforce this. I wish they would do the same for social stories and bring these to life, my son would really benefit from those! Guest guest
My Tom has always been fascinated by the Baby bumble bee series - and has a very mid-atlantic accent on words like " saaand " ! that Magic Key compendium DVD is fantastic - £8.99 on ebay, both boys are fascinated by it. I really like Magic Key, thanks for this recommendation, great value. I'll look out the others. Has anyone tried that right brain left brain cd series? Not sure which side of Tom's brain we'd like to develop - and they don't do one just called " brain " !! Guest guest
Come Out Side is on c- beebies, check out the c beebies web site if you havn't done so yet - its fantastic. My sons love something special and 'me too' at the moment which all about people dropping thie children off at Granny Murrey's the child minder and going to work, so it all about which way they go, what job they do & what happens what time of day etc. Sounds crazy but they love it. I agree my son with ASD has learnt so much from children's t.v programmes. Lara
