Guest guest
Rhonda, Get the least expensive type of cover from Allergy Control Products, the type with the solid urethane backing and fabric coating. (Urethan is soft, not noisy like vinyl.) The expensive porous(woven)type are very comfortable but they have holes and are therefore not completely effective. In addition, they are so porous that they allow all body moisture to pass into the stuffing, allowing dust mite growth to continue unabated. If you really can't use mite covers, place it in a dryer once a week for 20 minutes (low-medium heat)and replace the pillow every year. C. Guest guest
So the $4.99 ones work? I have night sweats and wonder about sweat wetting the pillow but if the ones I have now let sweat thru no different. Seems mine said breathable but waterproof but I can't remember for sure. Guest guest
, I know you don't advise feather pillows but does putting them in drier once a week kill dust mites also? I plan to look for a different type of pillow but don't like the alternative I bought. --- Jeff May <jeff@...> wrote: If you really can't use mite covers, place it > in a dryer once a week for 20 > minutes (low-medium heat)and replace the pillow > every year. > > C. Guest guest
Barb, Regular heat will probably be lethal to mites but there are two problems (apart from the mites) with feathers. Some degrade into numerous respirable fregments that easily pass through many porous covers. Other feather pillows produce vast numbers of what appear to be microorganisms (from the original live bird I believe). Take a look at " Feather Bioaerosol " at <http://www.myhouseiskillingme.com/photogallery.htm>. Some feather items seem to be OK and others unpredictably seem to be a huge problem. Is it worth the risk??? C. Guest guest
Hi Jeff, Thanks. You cannot put a good barrier pillow case on feather pillows. I found that out as they have so much air in them that has to be able to move freely in and out of the pillow. Otherwise they are just like a hard balloon to sleep on. What do you consider a pillow easy to keep clean? I was using a rolled up flannel sheet and somehow ended up back with my feather pillow! --- Jeff May <jeff@...> wrote: > Barb, > > Regular heat will probably be lethal to mites > but there are two problems > (apart from the mites) with feathers.
