I'm using a portable maytag dehumidifier. It really is not big enough

for my livingroom and has to be emptied fairly often but I guess that

shows its working. I went to empty it tonight, and there were grayish

black sooty streaks especially in one of the compartments of the bin

that holds the water. Would this be dirt, or could this possibly be

mold, i.e. could the dehumidifier start growing mold because of

standing water? Does anybody know? I don't have a lot of experience

with dehumidifiers. I washed it out with softscrub/bleach.

I have had like issues and concerns -- I scrub the tanks (fortunately, I can get

my big boy hands inside...). I am also concerned about the fins but don't think

I have seen anything growing in that area.

I use two dehumidifiers PLUS my 5 ton A/C to try my darnedest to keep the

humidity below 50%.

Keeping OUTSIDE WATER RUNOFF running far from the house, venting showers,

yelling (kindly) at family members what the PLAN is, etc... I seem to be able to

control the humidity -- with the basement -- where I spend most of my time

(office, etc...) being the driest -- often around 35%.

So, generally speaking, I am fairly happy with moisture control in my

1935/2800sq ft two story and basement ---

It's a chore -- but it's worth it......
