Guest guest
You might try All-Bran. There are several different varieties. I like the All-Bran Bran Buds better than the kind shaped like strange little twigs. It has 70 cals and 13g of fiber per serving. It's sweetened with sugar instead of artificial stuff. Guest guest
n, you could substitute All bran or bran buds, the only problem is they do add sugar to these cereals. You might want to try making your own homemade bran muffins using natural bran, or consider making a hot cereal using different grains that include flax seeds. The seeds will go right through you ( and 0 calories). lol >>>> Any suggestions for alternatives without aspartame? Guest guest
Are you saying that you think whole flax seeds will have the same effect as bran? I wonder how many tablespoons of flax seeds I'd need to ingest..... I currently have been taking 1 Tbsp of flax oil (straight) PLUS 1/2 to 3/4 cup of Fiber One - for satisfying results. Actually, I could probably purchase straight bran from the natural food store bulk section, right? And add it to my oatmeal. Again, I wonder how much I'd need to use. Truthfully, I'm having such 'success' with the Fiber One, that I'm reticent to make any changes! But I'd prefer something with less 'junk' than I get from FiberOne.... Thanks n At 11:10 AM 4/4/2006, you wrote: >n, you could substitute All bran or bran buds, the only problem >is they do add sugar to these cereals. Guest guest
n, yes, I think whole flax seeds have a ton of fiber. I knew someone who used to add to her morning yogurt as an alternative to bran products. I don't know how much you should try, but a Tbs to test would likely do it. And definitely yes, natural bran is a good option. It just doesnt taste very good alone. Not sure if the stronger flavour would be masked in your oatmeal? Yet another cooking experiment, I think! lol I like Fiber1, too, but I rarely eat it because I get so much fiber in my regular food. My favourite thing is beans in my salad as my carb portion at lunch. There is a ton of fiber in them. >>> Are you saying that you think whole flax seeds will have the same effect as > bran? > Actually, I could probably purchase straight bran from the natural food > store bulk section, right? Guest guest
I'm just curious, does grinding the flax seeds reduce their fiber? It seems kind of a shame to eat the flax seeds and not get the omega 3s. Candace > > n, yes, I think whole flax seeds have a ton of fiber. Guest guest
- Unfortunately, no matter how much fiber I get from my daily food, it hasn't been sufficient! I've struggled all my life - I'm thrilled to have found relief - but unfortunately, I have to experiment - I don't know if the key is the 1 Tbsp of straight flax oil, or the FIber One, or the combination of the two! n At 01:29 PM 4/4/2006, you wrote: >n, yes, I think whole flax seeds have a ton of fiber. Guest guest
I don't know - but, here's what I also wonder. If I ingest ground flax, I'm certainly ingesting the calories (which I don't count, as they're a supplement). But if I ingest whole flax, do the calories even enter my digestive system etc? n At 01:37 PM 4/4/2006, you wrote: >I'm just curious, does grinding the flax seeds reduce their fiber? Guest guest
n, I understand where you are coming from. I am exactly the same way. On a typical day, I get between 36-50g of fibre (based on entries into fitday). That is a *crapload* of fiber, if you know what I mean. lol I can still have *issues* like you do. That is why I eat tons of fiber rich foods and lots of water, as you do. My dh has the opposite problem. He marvels at the amount of fiber I eat. He keeps his fiber amount down, otherwise, he'd be in the bathroom every 30 mins. lol By the way, it is nice to hear that someone else is like me. I've often thought that my system is out of whack because of this (i.e. there is something wrong with me!) >>>> Unfortunately, no matter how much fiber I get from my daily food, it hasn't > been sufficient! > I've struggled all my life >>>>

Guest guest
Candace, grinding the seeds does reduce the fiber by volume but not by weight. Sounds weird, I know. Basically, when you grind the seeds they 'fluff up' a bit, so you actually get less flax per Tbs then when you eat the whole seeds. So, you end up getting a little less fiber. Since flax seeds whole go undigested, you don't get the omega 3 benefit. I always take my flax as ground seeds to get the fiber, omegas, and bit of protein. I figure I get the best of everything that way. I put a flax link in another email. It is confusing because it suggests that there are calories with the seeds, even though they go through our system undigested... >>> I'm just curious, does grinding the flax seeds reduce their fiber? Guest guest
Hey have either of you tried Zelnorm? It was an absolute LIFESAVER for me. Guest guest
I haven't, but I'm not inclined towards taking medicine. Guest guest
I had IBS for about 2 years... I took zelnorm for a 6 week period and it stopped all the stomach/digestive problems I was having. It was amazing. And when I notice I'm not as regular, I start up another 6 week period (one pill twice a day) but I've only had to do that once in 3 years. LOVE it. Guest guest
Thanks for the clarification, . As far as the calories of unground seeds, maybe it's that the calories contained in the unground seeds are not available because they aren't digested. So they have calories, which would be listed, but your body can't access the calories, like the omega 3s. I don't know if that even makes sense (?). Guest guest
Candace, That is exactly right. If you can't digest it you can't access the calories.
