The headline MAY be accurate--but I give VERY low points for credibility to Kolata. Had it been Angier or Lawrence Altman, I'd be more inclined to believe it. Kolata f'd up every single article she wrote about HIV/AIDS, she's a right wing dingbat (I discovered later) and also went on to announce that angiogenesis inhibitors were the cure for cancer (i suspect she had stock options).
