Guest guest
I wouldn't think this would cause him to be spiking fevers and have a bacterial infection. My daughter has a port also and on several occasions she was given benadrly through the port, we never did motrin though. I think it's the same thing, just going in the port it reaches them quicker, as it goes into the bloodstream. I myself would be thinking more of a reaction from the IVIG. I only say that because my daughter had reactions from it every month until we switched to sub-q. I hope he gets to feeling better, and they can figure out what's going on! From: tapestrymlp@... Date: Tue, 22 May 2012 20:02:50 +0000 Subject: Oral Meds Given Through Port We're in a crazy situation right now. My son, 19 months, has a port. He went in for regular IVIG infusion yesterday. My mom took him as she normally does for me and she was tired and distracted and accidentally put his oral pre-meds (benadryl and motrin) through his port. (My daughter has a g-tube and also does IVIG and we always give her meds through her g-tube so that's how my mom got so confused and messed the meds up). Needless to say Josh is now in the hospital, spiking fevers and possibly has a bacterial infection. Has anyone ever heard of anything like this happening before? If so and you can tell me about it I would be really, really grateful. I want to know what was done to treat the child and what the outcome was. Josh is on IV fluids and IV antibiotics right now. I'd really appreciate any help. Jenn Mom to , 19 months CVID, Cassidy, 8 years CVID & CF
Guest guest
While there are IV forms of motrin and benadryl, Jenn said that her son was given ORAL motrin and benadryl through his portacath. Not only is there a huge risk of infection because it was not sterile but I would be concerned about his kidneys filtering out the motrin and benadryl from his blood since it was not formulated to be put into the bloodstream. Jenn, I hope your son is ok! On May 22, 2012, at 5:40 PM, Roach wrote: > > I wouldn't think this would cause him to be spiking fevers and have a bacterial infection. Guest guest
I am a RN and I can tell you specifically to NEVER give an ORAL MED THROUGH A PORT! IT IS NOT SAFE. If you do you need to seek medical care. If it is being done repeatedly then you need to make sure the tubes and meds are labeled and and are checking more closely each time you administer meds, food or whatever. THAT SAID! GIVING MEDS THROUGH THE WRONG ACCESS SITE IS 25% OF ALL MEDICATION ERRORS! It depends on the medication, the dose and how long it was prior to realizing what has happened. The good news is that you had medical care close by to begin IV fluids to dilute the medications and to watch your child closely. I will be thinking and praying for your family since I know this must be a very hard time for your mother in particular. Guest guest
YIKES! I bet your Mom feels really awful about what happened. Things should be ok esp after a day of IV fluids, I think a big problem would be the viscosity of those meds, not appropriate for IV obviously.....Might wanna call the manufacturer of both of those meds listed on the bottles and ask for any further guidance for the doctors taking care of him.....they have pharmacologists on staff and dial the # and say it's an emergency...they should direct you to the pharmacologist.... Have they done a chest X-ray? such thick material might cause some clumping in the veins. I'm an RN, but have never seen this before..... What a rough situation......just wondering....is his port always accessed beforehand? Please keep us updated.....hugs, sue From: tapestrymlp2 <tapestrymlp@...> Subject: Oral Meds Given Through Port Date: Tuesday, May 22, 2012, 8:02 PM  We're in a crazy situation right now. Guest guest
, she gave the oral preparations, these are not sterile nor or they meant to be given intravenously! So yes indeed they could cause an infection, possibly worse. When your child receives Benadryl IV, it is specially formulated to be given IV, it's not the liquid the child would drink or get in a g-tube! Guest guest
Thanks for all the responses, I appreciate it. They did a chest xray yesterday and his chest looks clear. So far his 24 hour blood cultures have all come up negative for bacterial infection. The port was accessed and then while the nurses drew up Josh's gamunex and bagged it they gave my mom Josh's pre-meds to give him. So Josh never got his IVIG infusion. We actually just finished his IVIG infusion just now - a day late but better that than skipping it altogether. Josh's Creatin level was a tiny bit low, .2 with a normal range of .4 to .6 and his BUN level was 8 with a normal range of 5-17. His CRP was also elevated, 4.32, but that is likely due to swelling at Josh's portacath site. He was accessed six times yesterday, poor thing. (The initial time, in the ER with the largest needle I've ever seen, and then 4 times after that just trying to get a working line before they finally got good blood return and were able to flush). They'll check his kidney function again tomorrow. In the mean time Josh cultured Rhinovirus from a nasal swab so the doctor thinks that is what is causing his fever. I have my doubts though because Josh almost never gets a fever, even when he's been really sick. I don't know though. I'm really hoping there's no lasting harm from all this. It's all a bit scary. My poor mom spent most of yesterday crying and she never cries. I've told her that I'm not mad at her, that things just happen and we'll get through this but of course she blames herself and has taken it really hard. Thanks for the suggestion of calling the manufacturers, I'll do that tomorrow and see if we can get more information. Guest guest
Glad to know he is holding his own for now. I think it is a good idea also to call the manufacturer. Hopefully the doctors have already thought to do this...... So far SOOO GOOOD. I continue to pray for your family. Especially that your mom can forgive herself for making a mistake. As a nurse I continue to struggle with how EASY it is to make mistakes and I continue to struggle with a HEALTH CARE SYSTEM that puts families in this level of care so that they have to FEEL the grief of making a mistake. I am now dealing with a 16 year old that " hates " me because I have had to poke him all these years and force meds on him etc etc. I know he does not truly hate me but I also know that I was not always there to hug and hold him so others could be the BAD GUY for his care. He is REALLY struggling right now with his life and wish there was more that I could do to help him accept where he is and move on. HUGS BARBIE From: tapestrymlp@...
