Hi Janice,

Welcome to the group. My 10 1/2 yr. old daughter, Billie was diagnosed

with OCD last August. I moderate the OCDKids list. To subscribe, send

email addressed to OCDKidsSupportGroup-subscribe

Then type the word subscibe in the subject line.

If you have any trouble joining, please email me directly. The kids list

has been rather quiet lately. I suggest that you have your daughter send

an intro to the group when she is ready. Let me know if you have any

questions.

Thanks everyone for your posts. I will give my daughter the

information after school today and we can log on together and

sign up. Your help is greatly appreciated. She had a great

session this morning and is really on the " up-swing " .

She is also an immature 11 year old so I think the kids group

versus the teenage group would be much better for her.

Hi Lee, welcome to the group!

Well it sounds as if you are doing a great job with your son, getting

therapy and talking to him about this. Is his current therapist

familiar with OCD treatment too? Is your son already on any

medications?

I want to say STOP FEELING GUILTY!!!! and I know that can be hard to

do at times. I'm a single mom with 3 sons - oldest is 17, then twins

13 y/o. One of the twins was diagnosed at around age 11.9 with OCD

after it seemed to hit " overnight. " I knew immediately from his

behaviors that he had OCD, but as I learned MORE about it I realized

he'd ALWAYS had OCD in more ways than I realized. The most I'd

noticed was where in elementary school he would erase and rewrite

letters and trace over & over some. Nothing that really caused any

problems. Then I realized all those QUESTIONS about death and dying

and " when will this heal? " and " will I get cancer? " and so on had

been OCD. And his fear about dying, he'd leave the room if something

relating to it was on TV. Now all my kids went thru some fears about

death/dying but the other 2 got through it but his seemed to affect

him more/longer. And then at the beginning of 6th grade, lots of NEW

definite OCD compulsions began.

Anyway, then as I learned more I remembered ME and some behaviors I

had gone thru growing up plus also after I was " grown up " but they

seemed to pass. But they WERE OCD behaviors. So I thought, well he

got it from ME! Now, his twin also went thru definite OCD behaviors

as a toddler for a few months and they passed. My oldest doesn't

have any, at least that would get a diagnosis. By that I mean that I

think MOST people have a " little OCD. " I still have to check once

after turning the iron off to see IF it's off, but only once.

Anyway, so 1 out of my 3 seems to have OCD that apparently IS going

to stick around, unlike for me and his brothers. And now I find

myself looking at MY mom and thinking, " Hmm...maybe THAT'S why

everything had to be done HER way?? "

I'M TRYING TO SAY DON'T FEEL GUILTY as at least this IS a condition

that you well know is treatable and he can learn to deal with through

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and ERP. With my son there are

no close-by OCD-experienced docs, so I just learn as much as I can

and educate myself and him. When it comes to " guilt " I save that for

the " I know I'm not spending enough time with... " and " I shouldn't

have said.....but I'm in a bad mood " and the times they complain to

ME about ME and I know they're right! But I don't feel guilty

anymore about 's having OCD. I sometimes have felt that maybe

I could have " headed it off " IF I'd done this/that, but in reality I

think even THEN he'd have probably begun these behaviors eventually

anyway.

Does some of his behaviors compare to what you experienced with OCD

when you were younger?

Gotta go! Again, welcome and hope to hear lots more from you!

Dear Lee,

Welcome -- I just joined, too, within the last month. I have an 8

yr. old daughter, who also experiences intrusive thoughts. It can be

scary (for both of us) but we're working on coping with it. Since my

daughter's diagnosis, I see so many tendencies in myself that

are " ocd-ish " so I suppose it's possible that we pass this on in some

way to our children, yet our guilt won't ever be productive. I

understand how you feel, just want to encourage you to keep your eyes

fixed on the path before you, and not on any guilt from the past. I

was extremely pleased and relieved to find this group, and it has

already offered me a lot of hope and support. I hope you'll find

that to be true, too.

Blessings,

~~~~~~~~ My guess is she is familiar with ocd becuase she was very good with
helping him out about 2 months ago when the intrusive thoughts came up...plus
he trusts her ALOT which doesnt happen easily... and no he isnt on meds....
this thing with the touching and counting, he told me this
Hi Lee,
I am glad you found us. Your son is lucky to have you
for his Mom. I have found being albe to talk about OCD
is a big step for getting free of it. Your son is at a
good age for learning about it. Our son has never been
able to openly talk about it and gets angry when it is
brought up. He is in big denial, but has been able to
take medication that helps a great deal. If he could
get CBT and ERP I think he would be so much better
off.
I hope your sons therapist can keep working with him
so he can avoid some of the secretness this disorder
seems to create.
- welcome to the group - there really is an abundant pool of knowledge in
this group.... you will come to find that out!!! :-) Congrats on making the
decision to change your lifestyle as well.
I'm relatively new here myself (been doing BFL since Jan, but only " half-assed "
and today started a new self challenge)... but I'll give my two cents to some of
your questions! :-) My final straw was when I had to continue to by " regular "
t-shirts from the guy section because I hated walking through the female section
and seeing all the skimpy clothing that I couldn't wear (okay, some of it I
would NEVER wear in a million years regardless of my body lol). I used to be
able to feel comfortable in tank-tops, etc... and I had to pack all that away
when I gained my weight - that is my measurement, actually. I don't weigh
myself (depresses me), so my goal is to fit into my clothing from when I was
first married (2 years ago). :-) I am attaching something I find useful for
myself - it is a menu I make up every Sunday.. .this is my one from last week.
I put the time that I want to eat those meals, but I always mark on my calendar
each week, so that I know for sure when I
ate the meals, and if I altered at all (which I do sometimes). I post this
menu on the fridge each Sunday (which is also the day I go shopping) and keep a
pen right next to it so that I can make alterations as needed. But if I have it
on the fridge (next to a picture of my husband and I back when I was a good
size!), I really struggle with eating anything BUT BFL approved foods, because
it's right there staring me in the face, lol. :-) By the way - ALL of my foods
on this menu are in the Eating for Life book.
Body for Life is a very easy diet to adapt... because you aren't really
depriving yourself of anything... you are making a change that will last for
your lifetime... you aren't cutting carbs out, or lower protein, or anything.
In fact, with each meal - you should aim for equal carbs and protein.... don't
eat less carbs because you have heard you shouldn't eat carbs - just limit your
" bad " carbs. :-)
Do you have the Eating for Life book?? I would highly recommend it - all of the
recipes are real simple to make, and very family friendly. The great thing
about that book that I enjoy so much, is that a lot of the
breakfasts/lunches/snacks are measured out for 1 person (some are two). Dinners
are either 2 portions or 4 portions. It really is very easy to follow. :-)
A lot of people think that working out if you are doing cardio is done best on
an empty stomach, most would suggest first thing in the morning. Don't eat
before you go, and wait an hour after you get home to eat as well. That is ONLY
on cardio days though. When you do weights - eat something small before and
then make sure you eat right when you get home - you want to feed those muscles
- not deprive them! :-)
What part of ORegon are you in? I'm in Boise, Idaho.
Also.... an important aspect of BFL is to make sure you write down your goals
for your challenge... and re-read them everyday.
Anyways... post any questions you have here... and post often... this is a great
accountability group!!
I'll take the first few...
1. Yes, you can have coffee and tea. Just make sure you're also
getting enough water. It's a good idea to drink an extra glass of
water for each caffeinated drink you have.
2. It takes most people at least one 12 week challenge for it to
become second nature. You know, so it's just what you do and not
something you have to think about so much.
3. Getting the workout done is much more important than getting the
timing perfect. If you can do it in the morning, great. If you can do
it later, great. Like the Nike slogan says, Just do it. :-)
Welcome ,
You have found a great support group here :)
Here's what has worked well for me...
-I homeschool two as well, ages 5 and 13.
-I prefer to do my cardio time first thing in the morning while they
are asleep and I can give it 100%.
-I go to the gym for weight training evenings when my husband is
having " quality time " with the kids.
-I made two copies of the food list on page 83. One I take to the
grocery store, one I post on the refrigerator to prompt me for what a
" meal " is
-coffee and I don't get along, but I do lean on green tea. One cup in
the AM and one at noon.
More later,
late for an appt.
Welcome . If you have questions along your journey,
definitley post, everyone here is very helpful. I'm not surprised
you had trouble sticking with Atkins. I can't live without carbs
(healthy ones of course), they are essential for your brain to
function, help prevent disease, and fuel your workouts. So don't
beat yourself up about dropping Atkins. BFL is an easier plan to
follow, in my opinion, but it does require planning.
(our fearless leader!) answered some of your questions. I'll
give it a stab, too.
1. I drink coffee everyday. BFL even suggests a cup of coffee first
thing in the morning with fasted cardio to kickstart your fat
burning. Generally, I have 2 cups in the morning, after that I
stick to water and a green tea in the afternoon. Make sure you get
all of your water.
2. I've eaten 5-6 meals / day for a long time (pre BFL did South
Beach) so I'm not a good person to say how long until I got used to
it. I CAN'T miss these mini-meals, or I feel incredibly hungry. I
just love to eat!
3. Fat burning is about a calorie defecit, so make sure you get the
exercise in and eat the 6 small meals properly proportioned. Fasted
cardio in the morning is more of a 'tweak'. I can't do it at that
time either usually because I have 2 kids to get off to
school/daycare. I usually do my cardio at the end of the workday (5
pm or so), or lunchtime, or later in the eve at 9pm (not ideal
because it can keep people up sometime). I think the trick is to
make sure your pre-workout meal is 2 hrs before you do the cardio.
Then eat about 30 mins after it. For weights, I usually have a bit
of a snack 1-2 hrs before to actually fuel my workout, or you
can 'bonk' and not lift as strongly. You might consider going for a
walk with your kids first thing in the morning prior to eating
anything (except your cup of coffee). This would be added bonus to
the regular workout program.
4. I feel better, stronger. I sleep better at night. I've lost bf
and fit into my clothes better. I don't crave junk food anymore. I
actually feel physically ill if I drink any alcohol now. I don't
experience back pain anymore.
5. I've always been a healthy weight, but never happy with my
physique. I've worked out with weights for 10 yrs and cardio for 20
yrs consistently. BUT, my 'WHY' comes back to the death of my
father when I was 17 yrs old (cancer). I've seen what it can do to
a person and I'm doing whatever is in my power to be healthy. My
family history also include high blood pressure (mother), heart
disease (grandmother), and diabetes (grandfather), so I want to be
healthy for myself, my family & to watch my kids grow up. My
final 'straw' in my fitness quest was that the program I was on
(excessive cardio & weights) was not working, and I was getting
injuries.
Hep
C is generally not a sexually transmitted disease. It requires blood to
blood contact for transmission, so sex would have to be rough, or both partners
bleeding to transmit it that way. Condoms are in order if an hcv infected
person has multiple partners, but probably no changes are necessary if that
person is in a monogamous relationship. I have no idea about the legal
issues involved though.
Hi ,
Is it Beverly? I hope you don't have Still's but welcome to see if you do.
Still's almost always has the spiking fevers and I've never had the bathroom
issues but there are never any fast and hard rules with this disease so a
doctors diagnoses is the only way to go. We are happy to have you and hope you
can learn some information to take to your doctors in search of answers.
--->I'm new here too and haven't been diagnosed yet, but after all the
Drs. and blood tests and after reading the symptoms on the website,
Hiya, I'm new to this group, and I was wondering if any of you could help me identify some symtoms that i've been having for the past year or 2. Usually when I'm already a little hungry, but sometimes it can happen soon after i've eaten, I get a very strange feeling as if I'm going to faint which gets worse and worse until I eat sugar and carbohydrate. It makes me feel like my blood is very hot for some reason :-S I firstly thought it was my blood sugar, but i've had quite a few blood tests from different doctors and they haven't come up with anything. It's been going on for quite a while now and it is getting really hard for me to go out on my own because when it happens I can't look after myself. I have PCOS and was wondering if it has anything to do with that?Any help would be greatly appreciated,thanks,India :-)
