Guest guest
hi all, this is for the brewers that use herbs. i wondered if in your experience/opinion does the process of fermenting the herbals to make kt concentrate the strength of the herbs? it seems that yerba mate becomes more intense in flavor when made into kt, is this an actual concentration, or just a taste thing? my concern is that i am going to make a blend with some poke root in it which is a pretty strong herb, i'm using it for pain and inflammation. when this herb is made as a tincture, the dosage is one drop a few times a day, i am wondering how this would compute for the pot of tea. any help, opinion, experience is appreciated here. gail
Guest guest
Poke grows all over the Eastern US. I remember seeing it when I was a kid in Pittsburgh, PA. [unnecessary old portion snipped!]
Guest guest
I know it's all over the southeast. The tops of poke in spring make tasty salads and sandwiches. > > Poke grows all over the Eastern US. Guest guest
You must be careful with Poke, it is toxic if you don't know what you are doing. The locals boil the leaves, then throw out the water before frying the leaves with eggs. I understand the leaves to be toxic, but only from local lore. Guest guest
ok, here is what i did. since i opened this topic, i want to thank all who chimed in on poke root. it is very strong, for sure, hope nobody overdoses on this stuff. probably why it is so hard to find... anyway, last night i made a syrup with it, using 3 cups of filtered water brought to a boil. i put in 1 cup of dried root, and simmered it for about 30 minutes while i took a bath. i strained it and got 1.5 cups. i let it cool some, and put in 1.5 cups of honey, put it in a jar in the fridge. when it got cool, i dipped a kitchen spoon halfway in, and took that-maybe 1/4 tsp.-i had quite a headache and sore throat when i took it. immediatly got lightheaded, a little spinny, the headache was gone pretty quick. the sore throat was less, but still there. i could tell that if i had taken much more than that i would have not liked it at all! i probably would not go out driving after i took it. one of my friends says his aunt used to smoke it, and observed that she got pretty 'high' off it. it does seem to be useful for pain, i will try it again, but for sure, don't go out and take a spoonful of it! gail You must be careful with Poke, it is toxic if you don't know what you are doing. Guest guest
how true..for all the herbs, even gentle Chamomile, someone might have a reaction..respect all the herbs of this planet. Living in a pill popping society, people are conditioned to swallow anything their doctor prescribe..even when the warning is a mile wrong../long/ Good to know your medicine.Peace, Jahjet > > You must be careful with Poke, it is toxic if you don't know what you are doing. Guest guest
right..so right.i am blessed so far no allergies. My mom nursed it into me in small amounts in mothers milk, i did the same to my children, even gave them poison oak in tiny amounts, when the leaves are still at their youngest..some of the antidote is in the " poison " itself? i am not a doctor. Smile..peace..jahjet > > > even gentle Chamomile, someone might have a reaction > > > > > I can attest to that. Chamomile makes me break out in a rash. Guest guest
My wife has a lot of back and leg pain as a result of an injury 15 years ago. She does not like to take pain medicines. We have tried many different alternatives but so far nothing else has worked....so, do u think this " poke " will work for pain? I live in SC and I know what " Poke Salad " plant looks like. Are we talking about the same purple looking plant? I have never ate any of it. What a shame to miss out on this abundant weed if it is nutritional. Thanks, Lee <Living in a pill popping society, people are conditioned to swallow anything their doctor prescribe>
Guest guest
hi, that is the same plant, it is tricky to use safely-something about boiling once, throwing out the water and boiling again. email me privatly, i have some very good herbal stuff for pain, since i do not tolerate pain meds at all and have found some good alternatives. gail > > I live in SC and I know what " Poke Salad " plant looks like.
