I could understand if Dr Phil used a different context of the word, he wasnt referring to any person , disabled or not, in his statement. I personally dont like the word but he was describing a situation not describing a person.Marilyn Pyles <hillbillyhelper2@...> wrote: The term has been mentally impaired for a number of years now. Look at the true meaning of the word and not the slang. That attitude is impeding their relationship. Dr. Phil's show is information and entertainment,

not counseling. If you look for offense, you will find it. Marilyn Pyles re·tard 1 (rĭ-tärd') Pronunciation Key v. re·tard·ed, re·tard·ing, re·tards

v. tr. To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede. v. intr. To be delayed. n. A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay. Music A slackening of tempo. Box 773Southern Pines, NC 28388910-692-8272 or 800-909-9272www.thearcofmoore.org By chance and a little ashamedly, I was watching a few moments of the Dr. Phil show this morning (while waiting for trial coverage of Durham, NC, prosecutor Mike Nifong). The previously aired show featured an engaged couple in which the woman was bulimic and the man was threatening to call off the wedding unless she recovered from this condition. During

the conversation, Dr. Phil, not once, but twice, characterized the couple's situation as "retarded." I could not believe my ears the first time ... then he actually said this again!! I immediately emailed the show about his irresponsible, thoughtless and careless use of this term, said I was the director of an Arc chapter in County, NC, and described the efforts of The Arc and others to abolish the use of this word in derogatory and insulting descriptions. Dr. Phil, a Ph.d on TV "counseling" people, should definitely know better!! I warned in my email that the show would likely be hearing from many who shared my disgust over his use of the word, and strongly asked for an apology. As of this afternoon, I have heard nothing. I would encourage advocates to send a similar message to Dr. Phil with a demand for a response and apology! I sent my message via the following link from the Dr. Phil website: http://www.drphil.com/shows/page/contactdrphil/ ~ Pinpoint customers who are looking for what you sell. www.ourchurch.com/member/b/amyangel/
