Guest guest
, I believe the thinking here comes with the research that shows that some cases of OCD are caused, or triggered, by a person's inappropriate antibody response to bacteria, such as streptococcus. The antibodies the body produces attack the basal ganglia, area in the brain, which is implicated in OCD and some tic disorders. In trying to fight off the strep, the child's immune system goes haywire, and this area of the brain is attacked also. Hence the term PANDAS...pediatric autoimmune neuropsychiatric disorders associated with strep. Dr Swedo, a neurologist with the NIH has done much research into this, and she has published articles you may want to check out. Anyway, the treatment doesn't always work...the damage may have been done....my son developed severe OCD abruptly after he had scarlet fever which is caused by strep....one day he was a happy, hyper, but non-anxious little boy, then after the scarlet fever, he had tics and severe ocd......it has a definite neurological basis in many cases, well-documented. Some doctors give Penicillin prophylactically...some try IVIG to help the child's immunity. I've heard it works in some cases, but hasn't helped my child's ocd.....he gets it for CVID. please look up the writings of Dr Swedo, interesting.............Sue From: K <nalla70@...> Subject: interesting Date: Friday, May 28, 2010, 1:24 PM  why in the world would infusions help ocd?? I am not seeing the correlation? They are two totally separate issues? Makenzie
