Guest guest
As far as I understand things, your adrenal glands will kick in when you get to less than around 5 mg daily of Pred, but I too would like that to be confirmed. _____ From: Stillsdisease [mailto:Stillsdisease ] On Behalf Of Joan UK Sent: 13 August 2007 15:46 To: Stillsdisease Subject: adrenal gland Hi everyone I am hoping that someone will be able to answer my query. I have read somewhere that when you reduce prednisolone and if you eventually come off altogether your adrenal gland is then supposed to kick in again and produce its own hormones as normal. Does anyone know if this is so because I have been taking it for four years and wondered if the adrenal gland would still work and how do you know if it is not working properly. Hope you are all having a reasonable day Best wishes Joan U.K.

Guest guest
Joan UK I believe that it is so about kicking back in and is also why it is so slow and long getting there . by a slow tapering off you are also giving the glad a chance to start kicking in again . but it is also why if you all of a sudden stop it can kill you believe me i know . one day on predision high doses next day have no meds at all as ex was telling every one i was not taking any meds well at the time i was worth over a 1/4 mill dead and she loved money and i was not working no rocket scientist here but I believe she wanted me dead as she tried two times using the police to achieve that anh hoot i am alive and doing okay with a great wife that i love and call my bride still never been any poorer then now but also never was happier . there right money can not by you love not happiness I know tried both like that latter so much better as I am a penny pincher so it works for me LOL hugs the redneck Marty Stills ; An illness I know to well! Guest guest
Joan, I have been on prednisone for 16 years. I attempted to wean off of it last year but couldn't. My adrenal gland doesn't produce enough cortisol anymore. My doctor did a blood test for cortisol levels after I was down to 1 mg. I had started having symptoms of adrenal insufficiency. So I'm on low dose (5 mg) prednisone for the rest of my life. Aleeta adrenal gland Hi everyone I am hoping that someone will be able to answer my query. Guest guest
OK, according to what I've learned and experienced myself the answer is yes, your adrenal gland will take over once again once you get off the prednisone. You're body produces about 5mgs of steriod a day normally which is why your gland " shuts off " when you take in more. You will feel weakened in the beginning but it may not be enough to notice it. A nap will take care of that if you have time. You will also find sleep a little more restful (which would be wonderful). In case you have the same things I do when I'm taking prednisone your hair will not fall out in abundance (like mine does right now). Take care and be well. Guest guest
Hey: For those who want to get folic acid from a natural source, avocados are the answer, they are rich in folic acid. Well, just wanted to share it. Greetings. Bouldin escribió: Hi Ellen, My hair was falling out like crazy too...but I told my RD about it, and he prescribed Folic Acid. He had prescribed 5 MG daily, which I take at night to reduce upset stomach...but I reduced it to 3 MG and it's working very well. No more thinning hair. You might check into it. I know that MTX takes away your Folic Acid and that's why the hair falls out...I don't know if Prednisone does the same thing. Guest guest
Hi Joan, I was told that after weaning from prednisone for a while that the adrenal gland would start making the steroid again. It did seem to work this way when I went into a long remission last year. I was able to be off prednisone for almost eight years. Hope you can get the adrenal going again. </HTML>
Guest guest
Hi everyone, I'm just wondering, when you do get weened off Prednisone, what do you feel and how do you decide you need to go back up? I'm trying to reduce my Prednisone levels while I'm still on 12.5 MG of MTX weekly and Humira every other week. I've been reducing my Pred by 5 mg a day, every other week. Last week I was at 30, so Sunday I went to 25 MG and by Sunday evening, I started to really fell bad...by Monday I could tell I was going to crash and I could barely walk and by Monday night the fever started again (only low thank goodness). Not wanting to get worse and have it take forever to get back to a functioning level, I took 35 MG on Tuesday and back to 30 yesterday. And I'm back to my current 'normal'. My question is, am I freaking out too quickly, should I give the lower dose of pred more of a chance, although I was at 20 for 3 weeks when I had my tooth pulled and I could not function. How do you know what is the transition phase and what is just wrong? Does this make sense? I think this all means the Humira is not working on me and we have to go to plan D or E or wherever we are> Any thoughts? Hope you have a relatively pain free day! Guest guest
HI, I'm not sure, but you might be lowering the pred dosage too quickly. I have to stay on the same dosage for about a month before lowering. When I get below 5 mg daily, I have to lower by 1 mg every couple of months or I wind up back in a flare. </HTML>

Guest guest
Dear , 5mg drop per day of pred seems pretty fast to me, although I am not a doctor nor do I play one on tv! But I can ALWAYS tell when I've lowered my prednisone. And if I've lowered it too quicky or by too much I can generally tell that as well. But I've been trying to get off of it for almost 9 years now and countless attempts, so I've learned to " read " my body for what I should do. I'd check with the doctor, that's what I did in the begining.. Good luck. Guest guest
Carole, I knew I wasn't writing clearly (that's the pred for you lol). I meant to say I was weening off the pred by reducing 5 mg every other week. but my dose is daily. So I went from 40 to 35 now to 30 in a matter of 6 weeks. But when I tried to go down to 25, I could tell that same night...man did I hurt...the next day was even worse. So maybe I should stay at 30 for another 2 weeks, then try to go down to 25 every other day with the 30. My RD said to listen to my body as well, and reduce it as I saw fit...so I guess that's what I'll try. 9 years of trying to ween off this stuff....that's scary! What are you down to now? Guest guest
Dear , I usually don't decrease my prednisone until I feel " normal " as the new amount, sometimes that takes a week, 2 weeks, a month, sometimes 2 months. I've been at 6 mgs since 7/11. I'd probably be lower than that except I ran out of mtx the past couple of weeks so i don't want to lower the steroids until I'm back on them next week. I am going down by 1 mgs at a time. The lowest I ever got was .5 mgs every other day and I just could stay there! Ended up flaring and going back to 20mgs. Never got that low again. I've been at 5mgs several times but no lower than that since that time. Good luck to you. Carole in Hollywood FL In a message dated 8/17/2007 9:55:04 P.M.
