Pierced Ears

Just before Halloween we got my daughter's ears pierced. She is six with common

variable immune deficiency. We did the daily care routine as we were supposed to

for her ears for the full 8 weeks. After that I'd occasionally put cleaner on

her ears and we didn't switch the earrings too often and I made sure to use

hypoallergenic earrings.

It never occurred to me that Cass might have issues from her piercings. However,

in the past few months Cass has gotten several infections at the piercing site.

The earlobes are inflamed and red and there's nasty pus. Finally, tearfully, she

decided she didn't want pierced ears anymore after this last infection and we've

let the holes close over.

Has anyone else had a ton of trouble with piercings on their kiddos? Is this

just something that she should never do in future or can she get pierced ears

again as long as she faithfully cleans them twice a day or something like that?

I've told Cass that when she's a teen, if she likes, she can have her ears

re-pierced. Right now, even with her IGG therapy every three weeks she's just

too prone to infections in general as she gets close to her infusion date.

Thanks for any insights!

Thanks for all of the input everyone. And good point about this experience

discouraging other piercings ;D Knew there had to be a silver-lining somewhere.

When Cass is older, if she wants to try pierced ears again, I'll have it done

via the pediatrician in a monitored and controlled situation where we're

absolutely certain everything is sterile. We did try pure silver sleeper hoops

but she got an infection even with those.

Soooo. Can anyone recommend some really good clip on earrings? We tried a couple

from 's for Cass but they were just not padded enough and one left marks

on her ear that lasted a week! She would really love to have earrings so I'd

like to find a good clip on solution for her.

she's younger, 7 mths. This is still new to me and it just occurred to me that

she will be more prone to infections. I would definitely appreciate the insight

from others too!
