Guest guest
Were coming up on 180 days off SCIG and dd (CVID, age 11) has done wonderfully. I will honestly be shocked if her levels come back poor. We ran labs at the 100 day mark and her Igg was I think 967 and all antibodies were gone from the Ig. All those years of hell and illness were from a simple zinc deficiency. She's done well, we've had 2 illnesses since going off, 1 needed abx (sinus infection if I remember) and the 2nd she did wonderfully where as my 5 yr old crashed and burned with the same illness and ended up with pneumonia (she's tested positive for the same genetic defect that causes the zinc deficiency and her levels are still very low as we just started treatment.) I've checked the Dr's notes and labs and no where does it name the actual test he used to test antibody function WITHOUT needing to vaccinate her. I want the same test done again. The Dr up and disappeared a few years back and we were transferred to another PID treatment center so I can't just call up the clinic and ask. UCLA doesn't seem to know what I'm talking about. For those wondering if zinc deficiency may be the root cause of their child's PID google Pyroluria (these kids often have dx's from ADHD to bipolar/Sz) but a big flag of poor cellular zinc deficiency is little white marks on the nails and pale skin (palest kid in the family). Testing zinc levels is worthless unless your checking actual cellular levels which is a very specialized test and hard to get. Blood levels are often normal but the zinc never makes it into the cell due to pyrolles binding it up and flushing it in the urine. Asking your Dr for the urine test for Pyroluria will often get them to look at you weird. You can get the test from http://biocenterlab.org/tests/urine/pyrroles.shtml for $72 without a Dr's order. The test is very fragile and our insurance while it will pay for the test though Quest, Quest can't seem to get the sample to the lab intact without some form of thawing and refreezing happening which destroys the sample (we proved they were messing up and demanded they figure out whats going wrong on their end as I can't afford to keep paying to the test for 3 people!) Anyway, best $72 I ever spent! My dd has been cured of her Bipolar 1 with 2 simple little vitamins (zinc, B6) to treat the Pyroluria and it appears to have caused the CVID. Lots of info online from research studies on low cellular zinc status and immune deficiency to back it up:)
