One of the junk-mail practices in email is when a person's email is used to

harvest the addresses in that person's contact list to make a mailing list of

valid email addresses. Clicking on the link " verifies " that the email address is

active. All these verified emails can then be sold as emailing lists to

advertisers who want to buy an emailing list. A similar (but less invasive)

practice of buying mailing lists has been used for decades by direct-mail

advertisers.

The spam contains a link, like the one in that " advertisement " email, that is

used to qualify you as a person who is curious enough to click. I've gotten spam

like that from email addresses I know, like my daughter's and work colleagues'.

I've heard that if you get a random link, don't open it, even if you do

recognize the email address that it comes from. So, if I get an email from my DD

with a link to her wish list at her favorite retailer.com, I open it. If the

link is to www dot someOtherNonsense dot dot dot, I delete without peeking.
