My dd just got her braces off last week after 24 long months. She also got

a retainer (sure don't look like the retainers I knew growing up!!!) anyway,

she's been good about wearing it, but I know she doesn't wear it long enough

(they said 12 hours at least!) She maybe has it in for 8 hours MAYBE. I'm

hoping it won't make a real difference. As far as teeth already moving.....

beats the heck out of me... but I would think something more than retainer

would have to be done. maybe just a couple bands/brackets and rubber bands???

I

don't know. A friend of ours had their 12 year old boy do the same thing.

He actually LOST his retainer & was scared to death to tell his parents, so

he just never said anything. Hmmmm.

Definitely ask your ortho before too much longer. The fast you move, the

less the teeth will...

Hi Laurie-

I worked for an orthodontist for about 6 years. Does she have a

retainer with wires on it? If so, it is possible that the Dr. might

be able to make adjustments to the retainer to make it fit. It just

depends on how much her teeth have moved. Teeth will move after

braces, which is why it is so important to wear the retainers. If

she is supposed to go into the second set of braces sometime this

year, then they may choose to do them sooner or they may feel that

the movement that has occurred now can just be fixed later with the

braces. Hope this helps, I can try to answer any other questions you

have.

I haven't read the other responses to this so I'll probably say the same

thing as everyone else. I wouldn't worry about it. Her teeth have shifted a

little, I'm sure since the retainer doesn't feel right any more but she if she

is

going to do a second phase, it should be okay. When they do the second

phase, they can just move the teeth a little bit more. My oldest daughter

broke

her retainer a few months before her second batch of braces and I had just

recently replaced her sister's retainer (she had worn it for about four years

so I figured we got our money's worth) and I asked the orthodontist if it

really was a big deal. He said she could do without until her second batch of

braces went on. She wore the second batch for about fifteen months and all is

well. She had to wear her new retainer 24/7 for the first eight weeks after

the braces came off and then at night for about a year. Now that she is more

than a year out of braces, she wears the retainer at night maybe one night a

week. As long as it fits the same, that's all she needs to wear. If it

ever starts to feel differently, they said for her to wear it more. How long

has it been since the retainer was worn? Good luck. I don't think this will

cause you any problems with phase two. Kelley in NV

My dd did exactly the same thing.? She did not wear the retainer and her bottom

teeth shifted so much that the retainer did not fit.? I told her she would have

to pay for it out of her last summer's earnings, that I was DONE paying for

braces ($4,000).? She is 18.? She has made and canceled three appointments.

Here is the deal from our orthodontist:? Make a new retainer and wear it to keep

the teeth from shifting more ($350), or put on braces to fix the teeth again and

then get an appropriate retainer ($850).?

I don't know what she will do, but I don't care.? Her top teeth still look

good.? At 18, I can't MAKE her do anything.? Your dd is 13 if I recall, right??

What a shame.? At first I was furious, trying to control her getting the braces

put back on, giving her lectures, but none of it did any good.? Now I have just

backed off.

The bottom line worst case scenario:? We wasted our money and when she is an

adult, if she wants, she can get braces to correct her bite and make her teeth

more attractive.? Braces are one of those middle class luxuries.? Many people do

fine in life with crooked teeth as long as the bite is OK.

off-topic : retainers

My dd has been refusing to wear her retainer, since her braces were removed.

This was to keep her teeth in place between sets one and two of braces. Second

set of braces were to be put on some time this year.

So this AM, I had her put her retainer in, and it won't fit anymore. I'm

assuming that's because her teeth have shifted out of place.

So what happens next? Will a new retainer fix it? Or will they have to put

braces on again?

I've told her she's going to have some BIG consequences, and I " m not sure what

they will be yet.

I " m just wondering how much I " m going to have to shell out to fix this.

Anyone have any experience with this?

I really don't think it is going to be a big deal, especially since she is

suppose to have a phase two. The next round of braces will move anything back

that shifted during the absence of the retainer. It would be very different

if she was completely done with the braces and didn't wear the retainer in

the beginning, right after they came off. If your orthodontist makes you do

anything before the next phase, I'll be very surprised. You're going to pay a

ton for the next phase--it might as well move those teeth a little more for

you! Good luck. Kelley in NV

Yes, I'm going to get into the ortho as soon as possible. I told her to hope

it's not bad, because she's grounded from all electronics for a long period if I

have to pay a lot of money!

Okay that sounds better than what I was hoping. She's grounded from certain

things and I told her the length of time would depend on the severity of the

situation. She's too young to get a job (12) so if I pay with money, she's

going to have to pay something.

I seriously think she may not have been wearing it for up to five months.
