Guest guest
I would have done the same thing! I have pulled my son out of school when I have heard of something going around the school. The school should inform you. Do you have a 504 plan? If not, it would be beneficial. However, that doesn't mean that they will call you. I would talk with the teacher and reiterate the importance of you being called in such circumstances. My 2 1/2 year old twin boys have been diagnosed CVID and we are very concerned about H1N1. I was told today that a child at my daughters school has tested positive for influnza A. She has been out of school all week but her sister has been at school and is in my daughters class! This childs parents sent her to school all week anyway! The school did tell me as soon as they knew, but we didn't know until this morning. The only answer I could get from the boys doctor was that it was a personal decision as to wether or not to pull the girls out of school and wait to see what happens. They said that they can't cause a panic by telling parents to keep their healthy kids home. I picked my girls up and intend to keep them home for the next few days just to be cautious. however the school does not seem to be taking this seriously and have no intention to inform other parents of the positive test. Nor do they intend to tell parents that they should keep their kids home for the recomended 36 hours if ANYONE in their family tests positive. Am I doing the right thing or am I being paranoid? What have you all been told to do? Guest guest
You are in no way wrong. I work in the field of education, and have a child with PID. Your local health department AND your school District have the obligation to tell parents that there is an infected child (once they have tested positive) on the campus. The school District also has the obligation to enforce the sibling staying home. They open themselves up to huge liability should they choose not too. Unfortunately, the choice of your District is political. These are hard economic times, and most Districts are concerned that if they release this information it will create absences, and they will loose ADA dollars because lack of attendance. In federal dollars alone, if 50% of one school misses one day it could " cost " the District thousands of dollars. But that is not an excuse to not give other parents an informed opportunity to decide what is best for their child. I think you are doing the right thing. If I had someone at my sons class test positive I would keep them home until that other student had clearance to return. My son is on an IEP (he qualified for special education) but even with a 504 plan you can require the school to give you notice when a teacher suspects a students has an active infection and has come to school. We keep a positive relationship with the school, open lines of communication, ensure his classroom is bleached down each school day (after school) and allow the school to contact me the easiest way possible (usually they choose email) to notify me of other students illnesses. Our doctor has given us Tamiflu and Z-Pacs to use at our discretion, and to notify him when we do. We have also signed a release for him to communicate with the school and they know they can fax him questions anytime, and he is happy to respond. Lastly, we have him fill out a health form (usually used on students with diabetes or asthma) on how to address my sons health issues, and had him provide input into the IEP. My two cents.
