Guest guest
Hello!! We were notified on Friday that a student at 's school has bacterial meningitis. The school is very small, about 70 kids, and this student has had contact (direct or indirect) with every student at the school, including . The school did a great job of timely notifying us, and I in turn notified out immunologist, Dr. M. has hypogam (overall IgG and subclass 1 def.) Dr M immediately wanted evaluated at the ER, which goes against everything I know as a parent. My son is healthy (for a change), showing no signs or symptoms, is doing great, and just had his IVIG last a little over a week ago. A trip to the ER would guarantee he would catch something while he was there. It just didn't make since to me to expose him to sick people at the ER when he himself is not sick. After much discussion, and dragging my heals about going to the ER, he agreed to instead prescribe him an oral medication, Rifampin. Do you think this really warrants an ER visit in a child with no symptoms? Isn't the purpose of doing IVIG to bring his IgG and subclass 1 to " normal " levels, so that precautions such as this are not necessary? It is exhausting trying to keep track of the health of my child and the 70 other kids in the school. Do you reach a point with IVIG that you no longer have to be concerned (within reason) about what he is exposed too? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!! It has been 48 hours and he is still symptom free! TIA!
