Barron was diagnosed with autism in the mid-1960’s, at the age of three. He states that autism “affected my social, physical, speech and other skills. It affected my childhood, teen years and adulthood, and I fought for 12 years to overcome it.” , a college graduate, now works as a successful reporter/copy editor of a major newspaper in Youngstown, Ohio. writes that he is “no longer affected” by autism. In this workshop, will describe an insider’s view on living with autism, why individuals with autism do the things that they do and why some of the atypical behaviors occur. He will describe what it was like living with autism and how he managed to overcome the disorder and enter the world as a successful and productive member of society. ’s courageous story is full of wonderful insight, encouragement and HOPE. Judy Barron, mother of , began her career as a fifth-grade reading teacher in a rural school. She and her husband, Ron, with their two children moved to Los Angeles in 1978 to go into the music business. They relocated to New York City in the 80’s. In 1992, she wrote, with her son, , There’s a Boy in Here (Simon & Schuster). The book- the story of ’s amazing emergence from autism, which won the Award, has had four hardback printings and several paperback editions. As reflects on writing the book with his mother, he states “It was very interesting, when the book came together, my mother and I finally knew each other for the first time.” At the workshop, Judy will talk about raising a son with autism and the challenges that she and her entire family faced. She will describe her life as a Mother who so desperately wanted to help her son and the ways in which she was able to achieve success little by little over a long period of time. Judy will give a mother’s perspective on how to deal with receiving a diagnosis and going into action for a child you so desperately want to reach. Her story is one of how a mother’s love, strength and determination saved her son from the beast that we know as AUTISM. most recently co-wrote the book Unwritten Rules of Social Relationships, Decoding Social Mysteries through the unique perspectives of Autism, with Dr. Temple Grandin.
