Missy, it seems like from what you've said he has an immune deficiency

diagnosis....ask the immunologist what the specific name is....or get the

consult notes and clinic notes....

 

Perhaps he's just " been lucky " so far, maybe...but with those low levels of

several components of the immune system...he's eventually going to get

sick...the donor antibodies will reduce and perhaps prevent most of that.

 

Also, people with those immune defects are more likely to develop malignancies,

as the immune system also helps protect us against some forms of cancer.

 

So I would say if everything is low in his immune system like he has, and the

immunologist is ordering the IVIG, ask more questions and trust he seems to be

doing what's prudent for your child's health.....ask and ask again...Sue

My son has low IGA and low IGG subclass 1 and 3, with a low total IGG. The

vaccine titers done in March were normal. His B-Cells, Mature T Cells,

Helper Cells, and Supressor Cells are also all low. He has a lot of other

medical issues, but he is NEVER sick. He has had 1 stomach bug in his whole

life. That's it! He has had a bit of UTI's which have resulted in some

mild kidney damage, but the UTIs are a direct result of his other medical

issues.

We are in the process of starting the IVIg infusions (not actually started

them yet and will more than likely need a port placed). We have an

appointment with his diagnostic doctor to discuss everything, but in the

meantime I'm just confused and slightly irritated.

I know he needs the infusions and it's something we have been talking about

for a year now. What I don't understand is why he actually needs them if

he's never sick. Shouldn't he pick up everything? I mean he licks the

floor at Walmart on a weekly basis! he licks strangers shoes! We

practically live in the hospital for all of his specialists visits, you

would think he would pick something up there? I know I do.

Someone please enlighten me. We have also not been given a specific immune

how to explain to them why he needs treatment when I don't understand

myself. I'm very impatient and I want to call his doctor with all of my

concerns RIGHT NOW, but I would rather wait and talk with him in person. So

PIDs can manifest in different ways. Its most common to have chronic, severe,

persistent, odd infections but there are exceptions. Also, PIDs are typically a

geneXenvironment disease. My daughter had bad numbers + exposed to bad bugs and

couldn't recover. Our son has bad numbers but we have taken more precautions w/

him so his presentation is very different.

I would suggest that never getting sick is not normal either.
