what do you do instead of emotional eating?

Gosh, I love to eat! In fact, I get more pleasure from food in the past

18 months than I've gotten in as many years! That's been one of the

payoffs of changing my eating lifestyle - food is so much better now. I

enjoy eating, rather than the mindless stuffing I used to do. I confess,

in some ways I really miss not being able to chow down when I'm happy,

sad, angry, anxious, bored, or any other emotion you can imagine. I've

done this since I was a little kid, snuck food, hid out somewhere, and

ate it. Food was my security blanket. But I'm 54 years old and the

behavior that comforted me as a child does not work today. It just

results in poor health and negative feelings about myself.

What do I do instead? I just " don't do it. " I know I can't go there any

more if I want what I want, which is to be healthy and feel good.

Sometimes I do choose to eat, and I adjust for it later.

For the most part, I do other things. I listen to podcasts on my mp3

player. I surf the internet. I drink herbal-type teas instead of eating.

I go to the gym. I read a book. I cook for my husband. I work in the

yard. I walk my dog.

I do something else. Right now I'm going to go eat a Gala apple and some

Greek yogurt for a snack. Everyone else is eating a spread in the break

room at work, but I didn't prepare that food, so I've told myself that I

prefer to know what I'm eating.

Right or wrong, there it is!
