Guest guest
Air freshener is a no no both on the plane and in the hospital so strike that. A lot of this is stuff you can buy once you get there for less then $20. We do the out of town thing quite often and manage to get enough for 2 people including tons of snacks in 1 soft sided bag with no problem. We often just do a quick stop at Target or something and spend $10-$20, easier then hauling lots of stuff:) I'm not sure but I'm thinking shaving cream is also a no no on planes, anything under pressure is since it can explode and that would be a bad thing at 30k feet... ________________________________ From: Ursula Holleman <uahollem@...> Pedpid Sent: Sat, April 17, 2010 11:14:19 AM Subject: hospital packing list So with Macey about to go into the hospital for a week and it's no where near home I'm trying to come up with a comprehensive packing list. Complicating matters is that I refuse to pay the $23 per bag to check our luggage with Delta. So we're each taking a carry on. So space is limited. Here is what I've come up with so far. toothbrush hairbrush deodarant shampoo conditioner/detangler hairdryer (check with the hospital to see if you can use your own) ponytails lotion air freshener shaving cream/razor socks/fuzzy footies underwear p.j.'s street clothes (for when they let you break out of your room) sports bra (to wear to procedures where you can't have any metal on) computer ipod Can anyone think of anything to add to it. Guest guest
A couple of things to consider adding to your list: * something of sentimental value she can draw comfort from. * a blanket. Hospitals often are cold, plus having your own blanket eases a little of the hospital stuffiness. * a book * picture of family and friends to put in the room * something to draw on I would consider dropping the " won't pay to check a bag " policy. Your and your childs comfort during the hospital is more important. You can fight that battle with the airlines at a later date. Guest guest
We are pretty experienced packers/flyers and almost always for medical trips. I find it much better/easier to buy things once you are there- shampoo, lotion, toothpaste etc..You don't have to worry @ getting travel sizes to bring and it doesn't take up so much space. The only things you really need to bring are clothe, meds and personal items like ipods. We get books while we are there too- a trip to the book store is always a good stress reliever. We rent movies at redbox too for entertainment. We have usually done laundry while gone for longer trips too instead of trying to pack so many clothes. The laundry detergent in sheets are convenient while traveling. It's probably the PID mom in me but with laundry 'concerns' I usually wash towels/sheets/pillowcases in bleach even if though they are clean when we are traveling and then, next load use the washing machine for other laundry for us- so that the machine is cleaner before we use it..maybe TMI but thought it was safe here to confess my laundry weirdness ?!? Guest guest
I have also found between Cailey and s hospital stays that are away from home.... We contact the hospital get an address and person (chaplin, social worker, what not) and we pack one large suitcase that has, clothes, personal items, blankets etc.. whatever we will need based on the length of stay then UPS or FedEx it to the hospital instead of dragging it along. That way all we have to carry is a small bag with meds pj's and that kinda thing in it  From: Lori W <clwild1@...> Subject: Re: hospital packing list Date: Sunday, April 18, 2010, 11:15 AM  We are pretty experienced packers/flyers and almost always for medical trips.
It's probably the PID mom in me but with laundry 'concerns' I usually wash towels/sheets/ pillowcases in bleach even if though they are clean when we are traveling and then, next load use the washing machine for other laundry for us- so that the machine is cleaner before we use it..maybe TMI but thought it was safe here to confess my laundry weirdness ?!? Lori lucky mom blessed with triplets www.caringbridge. org/visit/ bradenwild > > So with Macey about to go into the hospital for a week and it's no where near home I'm trying to come up with a comprehensive packing list. Complicating matters is that I refuse to pay the $23 per bag to check our luggage with Delta. So we're each taking a carry on. So space is limited. Here is what I've come up with so far. > > toothbrush > hairbrush > deodarant > shampoo > conditioner/ detangler > hairdryer (check with the hospital to see if you can use your own) > ponytails > lotion > air freshener > shaving cream/razor > socks/fuzzy footies > underwear > p.j.'s > street clothes (for when they let you break out of your room) > sports bra (to wear to procedures where you can't have any metal on) > computer > ipod > > Can anyone think of anything to add to it. Guest guest
Glad to see I'm not the only one who does this:) Never thought about Redbox rentals though, I will next time though. I think we've seen most of the movies at RMH and the bandwith there is too slow to steam netflix. Can you get more then 1 DVD at a time with Redbox? I've never used one although I see them every where. ________________________________ From: Lori W <clwild1@...> Sent: Sun, April 18, 2010 8:15:52 AM Subject: Re: hospital packing list We are pretty experienced packers/flyers and almost always for medical trips. Guest guest
We will be sight seeing some with Macey when we first arrive so that is one of the reasons for the bag only " policy " . Other reasons are the pricing set by the airlines which I don't agree with and contribute to. Macey's pretty comfortable in a hospital by now unfortunately. My husband also has CVID and his endurance isn't the best in the world so keeping things to a minimum is best. We were able to get the toiletries into 2 quart size bags. Our carryons consist of one rolling American Tourister and Macey's monogrammed duffle she just got from her grandmother for the trip (which will sit on top of the Tourister as we roll it). Plus the tourister is small enough to fit over one of the handles of Macey's wheelchair. One suggestion by someone was to take a pillow case from home because it will be softer and we will do that. Linen laundry we don't have any control over at the hospital and Children's Inn has transplant kids so I'm pretty sure they're on top of the laundry. Washer/Dryer/detergent are free there. As well as our stay (one parent can stay with Macey each night and the other will stay at the Inn). We will take minimal clothes and launder them to reuse. Guest guest
We took sleeping mask to help her deal w/ jet lag and nap/max sleep. But you may be on same time zone. Good luck!
