I sent feedback also so thanks for that, Heidi. Excellent program

and I learned new things, such as about Autism Speaks. Suzanne

was excellent in her vociferous attack at the govt and health care

response, or lack thereof, to this national crisis. We need to keep

doing more, all of us, to help make this better for our kids, our society

and our future. (Suzanne's comparison to the polio epidemic decades

ago was searing.)

I am in agreement with this. I think across the board in the medical community there is a lack of knowledge about autism and other developmental disabilities. I am a nurse and my husband is a physician and we were shocked with our son's diagnosis of autism. I can tell you alot about End Stage Renal Disease or Heart Disease...etc... These are areas that are addressed in Nursing and Medical Schools, but developmental disabilities are mentioned in a one day segment that I cannot even clearly remember. The same can be said for my husband. We educated ourselves about autism, but I feel angered on many levels about this. We are not being educated adequately to effectively care and treat the ever growing

population of children, teenagers, adults, and elderly individuals with autism. I feel strongly that true head-way will not be met as long as the number of medical professionals understanding autism is only a minority. I think at the minimum that every doctor in Pediatric medicine, Family Practice, Internal Medicine and General Medicine should have more extensive education about developmental disabilities. And I say this to the the minimum. I don't think this is an unreasonable request at all. We need nurses to be educated because we are generally the every day face that consumers see and many times can be the voice of the consumer or patient. How can we do this when we don't even know what to do.

medical background. Let's keep advocating (I myself need to do

more).

If ALL DOCTORS and ALL NURSES felt this way I think somethign more

could be/would be done. I actually had a Peditrican say to me one

time in a very snitty tone " WHAT IS WORNG WITH HIM " when my son went

ballistic when she checked his ears (b/c of his sensory issues). I

wanted to slap her! You are one person and you cant do it alone -

but together we ALL need to let our voices be heard! As I am sure

you know taht the Austism Walk is coming up in May. I pray that

every single mom, dad, bother, sister, friend, grandmother,

grandfather, aunt uncle, cousin, Dr., nurse, ect., ect., ect. that is

affected by this disease is there that day.
