Hi! This is my very first time making kombucha. I'm making my first scoby from

some store bought kombucha and I'm worried about some strange looking gooey

stuff on top. It's greenish gray and is a bit snotty looking Is this normal? I

took a photo of it, but I can't figure out how to attach it to my message. Any

help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Margret, it looks so gross! Do I scoop it off at any point, or just

bottle it with that in it?

Hi Beth, I always strain the KT through a fine nylon sieve before

bottling. The nature of the live KT is, however, to keep forming more

ooglies in the bottle and even after decanting, if you leave the KT standing

longer than a day. It's not harmful at all. It's the nature of Kombucha

to be ooglified - it's the nature of being alive ... is being messy! ;-)

But it's oh so healthy!

Absolutely NOT true!

I've grown my SCOBYs from GT Synergy, and my Kombucha has been comming out

great!

Normal! After all the sugar has been converted this is what to expect:

Kombucha vinegar.

Great stuff to use as starter, add to fruit juice, use as cleaner similar as

you would ordinary vinegar. Use it like Cider Vinegar. Great, neat with

honey and hot water against colds! Good for facial/muscle massage!

There is all sorts of misinformational tosh on the web! Also normal! ;-)

As Tavit says: Absolutely!

Thickness does not matter a hoot, but be generous with your Kombucha

vinegar as you add it to your next batch. It carries a bountiful supply

of Kombucha Yeasts and Bacteria.
