Guest guest
Hi , I HATED the Virtual Academy program. It is UNREASONABLE!!! My son is going to a special program for home schooled kids in WA that is probably not available in your state but our laws are incredible here. If you go to http://www.timeforlearning.com and you will find an EXCELLENT easy to do computer program. K-8th grade. We are supplementing with it. It is $20 per month. It has won lots of awards. I would also remind you that until high school NOTHING really counts and it is up to you to figure out what is best for your child. I am not sure what the specific laws are in CA but there is lots that you can do that is fun to help her learn that is not BOOK work.Just keep good records and show what she has done. We go to museums, plays, lesson in music, art and sports. Also many of our kids can go to public school as far as the health issues but for my son it is too much emotional stress to be in the " system " . He is doing SO well at home. Feel free to contact me if you want to talk further about it. Guest guest
IEP's dont really have a place in virtual schools, the only time there really useful is when it comes to state testing time. Other then that they are pretty worthless since I am the teacher. Using the local B & M school is not going to happen period for a variety of reasons, I just needed to vent about being forced into this life. Somethings just get fustrating after a while ya know? You let out those fustrations and you move on, no need to reinvent the wheel when its already the best solution for you but maybe you just needed to carry your load a while rather then use the wagon. Change of pace, what ever. The grass is always greener ect. ________________________________ From: Self <derrickandchristine@...> Sent: Sun, April 18, 2010 10:14:15 AM Subject: Re: ugh.... having fantasies of using public school... Guest guest
I'm planning on getting T4L next month. We've been doing K12 for 2 years now and I like the structure but next year were just going to worry about the 3R's and to heck with the rest for formal education for a year. I mean really, do you remember anything you learned in elementary from history or art that applies to today? " I " get far more out of dd's art, history and science lessons then dd does. I mean come on, does a 3rd grader really need to know about the brush stroke technique Michelangelo used? Or why the Romans took over everything and who took what lands? I can promise you they will not remember it in a year. Why waste time teaching it when they won't remember it? That stuff is more for the teen years. Now's the time to work on the 3R's which is dd's weak spot, at least the lang arts are anyway. I wish there was more for secular homeschoolers up here, most are hs'ing for religious reasons and we do not fit in with that group. The only option for chances to get the mini classes or what ever is to sign up with the public charter school which we tried which was a REALLY BAD fit for us, they wanted to see at least 5 hours a day worth of work sheets and dd is just not a work sheet kinda girl. We live in a small town so no chances to go zoo's and stuff so nothing to do but go to the park which we have to bike to. (Currently carless:( )Then there's the whole mental health issue where we need a school year from March to around Nov with light winter school instead of Sept to June like the public school. Will save us soooo much grief not trying to educate full time a child who's not mentally in that space ya know? Public school is just a bad fit all around for us, I just hate the homeschooling burn out phases... ________________________________ From: Barbara Jimenez <mother5590@...> Sent: Sun, April 18, 2010 10:23:12 AM Subject: Re: ugh.... having fantasies of using public school... Guest guest
Believe it or not, we dont have a local college and parks and rec only offers soccer and T-Ball for kids then the town pool is open in the summer but at $3 a person per day that's not something we can't afford (so $9 + 8 mile round trip bike ride after a day of swimming). Officially we only have about 4,000 people here. There is literally nothing here for kids:( Hoping to at least get dd into the local karate school to get her something to do but even that is over $100 a month (thank you SSI approval!). Oh get this, the summer day camp to keep kids busy though parks and rec last year was $125wk if I remember right. This town is ridiculously expensive and its rare for low income people to homeschool. I actually only know 1 other family that HS's due to health issues and is low income and they just moved here last month. Everyone else is middle upper class and what HS events I have heard of are ridiculously expensive and my favorite, the HS group requires you attend there planning meetings and no kids allowed to attend or they kick you out of the group. Yeah, I got kicked out cause I couldn't get a sitter to attend the meetings. I'm just tired of being isolated between the immune issues and being poor. Doesn't leave a lot of open doors for us around here but hey we can afford to live here (my rent is actually cheap) and in a safe neighborhood with access to get Dr's so we stay, its just socially its boring and isolating:( ________________________________ From: Barbara Jimenez <mother5590@...> Sent: Sun, April 18, 2010 11:56:06 AM Subject: Re: ugh.... having fantasies of using public school...
