11Alive News Marks Autism Month with Week-Long Series

It strikes one in every 150 children and the numbers are growing exponentially. What causes it? What are the warning signs? And what is being done to stop this terrifying epidemic? 11Alive’s Donna Lowry explores the fascinating subject of autism all next week. Stories begin Monday at 6:00am on 11Alive News Today and in depth coverage runs each night at 7:00pm on the Evening News with Wood. Plus, all stories, links and resources will be available on 11Alive.com. Viewers can submit questions to Donna, they’ll

be answered by experts and some questions may even be addressed on air.

You’ll meet the family of 4 year old Ben Hicks and see the innovative therapy he’s having great success with through the Easter Seals P.L.A.Y Project. 11Alive News will explore the full spectrum of autism; symptoms of this disorder can range from mild to severe impairments in communication, social skills and behavior. Donna will sit down with M. Shaffer, Jr., President and CEO of The Marcus Institute to discuss the March 19th Autism Walk and what The Marcus Institute is doing to fund research for prevention and an eventual cure.

You’ll visit the Georgia Institute of Technology, right here in Atlanta, where researchers have invented an amazing instantaneous video imaging system which is revolutionizing the way autistic children are taught, plus we’ll take you to one local school that is already putting it into action.

And log on to 11Alive.com all week long for information and advice from experts on the possible causes, signs and symptoms of autism, and what you should do if you suspect your child may be affected. And if you miss any of the news coverage, you’ll be able to preview each story before it airs, then watch it again later.

A new case of autism is diagnosed every 20 minutes.

Find out what you need to know about this devastating epidemic. Watch 11Alive News Today every morning at 6:00am, and the Evening News with Wood every night at 7:00pm beginning Monday for a fascinating look at the mysteries of autism.

11Alive, the News You Expect, the Balance You Deserve.

Hey Heidi, I thought this was great too! I contacted them and let them know about the petition on passing the Ga autism license plates and Donna replied back to me through email. She said she would post about it online on their site and let me know about any stories that could involve me on helping with future info and so forth. I wrote that I was very glad to see them doing this about GA resources and awareness...I think a big change is coming our way, so it does help working together. Strength is in numbers!
