Guest guest
I had an appointment at the local fitness center yesterday. As part of the program we have to go through three sessions with a personal trainer to learn how to properly use the equipment and design a training progam taylored for fo my specific needs. Well, the person I had been working with, fairly knowlegable on WLS and even the DS, was off sick. Ended up with one of those " body-builder " super health-nut types. i knew we were in for problems when the first thing noted was no exercises for the abs, " We need to correct that. " NOT!! I have a ventrial hernia and cannot do ab work, it's even listed on my sheet. Nope, you need to work on the abs to lose some weight and firm up those muscles. BTW.. We also need to adjust your diet. You're getting way to much protein and not enough fruits, veggies, and carbs. Hey, hold on there. It's time we get your supervisor in here and have her explain the facts of life to you. Thankfully, the supervisor, Molly, also knew about my impending surgery, the WLS and specifically the DS dietary requirements. She had requested a copy of Dr. K.'s pamphlet, read it, then borrowed my patient handbook to learn more. She's the one who helped design the program I'm on right now. Anyway, after about 15 minutes of dealing with the " newby, " Molly finally was able to convinve him of the error of his ways, and had me sit down with him and the DS pamphlet and explain the special dietary requirements of WLS patients and specifically DS patients. She also had me go over the medical problems associated with ventrial hernias and exactly what complications doing abs exercises could lead to. Hey, Molly. Do I get any free visits for teaching this stuff to your staff? At least there is one less idiot in the fitness field. Jerry

Guest guest
Way to go, Jerry! Hopefully, your education will keep him from trying to bully some other poor DS patient into doing things detrimental to his or her health.
