Hi friends,

Well, I have had a rough two days. First of all, my car has a hole

in the radiator which is going to cost about $300-$400 to fix. Of

course, this is money which I do NOT have to spend. I am living

paycheck to paycheck. This is going to really set me back BIG TIME!

I haven't done my taxes yet and have no clue whether I will get a

refund or have to pay. Secondly, I found out that Dr. K is not only

requiring the $3,000 program fee up front (which I knew), but all the

deductibles and co-pays to be paid up front, also. That means they

want the sum of about $5,000 up front between the office and the

hospital. Well, there's just NO WAY I can come up with that, PLUS a

minimum of $2,000 for air, hotel, rental car and expenses. That's

almost laughable...and I'd be laughing if I wasn't about to cry. It

looks like Dr. K will NOT be doing my surgery anytime this year

unless God provides a miracle. I am totally deflated and feel like

there is a big cloud of oppression hanging over my head. Please pray

for a miracle for me!!

I've got to say, the same thing has been depressing me. I know

lacking funds is my own darn problem... I grew up in a family of 5

kids and I make more than my parents ever did combined, yet I

struggle financially due to money mismanagement.... I hope THAT

isn't your problem. I've been TRYING to save and cut out non-

essential purchases, but haven't saved up enough yet. I'm hoping

for a decent sized refund in taxes... I haven't received any W-2s

yet, so I can't do my taxes yet. Everyone in my family is much

better at money management and savings than myself. My parents have

told me not to worry about the up-front expenses, implying that they

will loan me what I can't pay myself. I hate to burden them like

that. My surgical date is for March 10. Thankfully, I'm from

California, so travel won't be as expensive... I'll drive down and

have my mom drive me back.

Another thing going for me is I know there is no chance of losing my

job, and I will make slightly MORE money than if I were actually

working during my recovery. I'll be getting state disability (which

is non-taxable... hence the MORE) and my Disability Reserve from

work will make up my standard gross income. This will allow me to

keep up on my regular monthly bills, like rent and car insurance.

It's kind of funny, in a way, that three of us in the ER will be

going out on disability in a row. Two of my co-workers are

pregnant. One is a high-risk and will be going on bedrest any day

now. The other will go out, just about the time I THINK I'll be

coming back, but there is a chance all three of us will be out at

the same time. They have already hired a temporary that starts in a

week or two to replace me (smoother transition if there is

overlap). He has already agreed to do a double contract, so he'll

stay around for at least six months... if he doesn't decide to stay

on permanently (he's been here before and we all liked him). They

plan on hiring at least two other temps to make up for us and to

allow the other nurses to get their vacations. All of this at the

same time we are training in 6 new ER nurses (3 new grads, 3

transfers). I'm starting to look at the situation with amusement

now.

BTW, how long are most people limited for lifting and working long

hours? I've been asked to teach some classes if I'm able to while

on limited duty. I teach CPR, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support),

and PEPP (Pediatric Education for Prehospital Providers), as well as

in-services on many things we do in the ER. I'm hoping to find a

PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) instructor course to take as

well, while on leave. With the PALS instructor certification, I

could issue a PALS re-certification card to students taking my PEPP

course.
