Dear ,

I too was recently diagnosed with RA and I have been on plaqenil since

October and I too am tired and don't like doing anything after I get off from

work

as I am so tired. Also, the plaqenil causes me to have diarrhea after I eat.

I just about have gotten to the point to not want to eat because of being so

sick afterwards. Do you have the same problem?

This question if for whoever can answer:

Is there a particular diet that we should be on?

This is a great group and I am a newbie myself and really don't post but I

have learned so much info from all of your emails. The support is great!

Love,

Wanda :)

Wanda,

One of my diabetes medications caused me severe diarrhea. I started

eating yogurt every day, and I no longer have that problem. It would be

worth a try. Sue

For what it is worth....I too, am plagued with diarrhea, however my " finf " has

been that I now drink two or three 8 - 12 oz glasses of fruit or vegetable juice

a day ie; vegetable juice such as V-8, 100% grape juice, ruby red grapefruit

juice etc. You would think it would cause the problem to become worse but it

has been totally oposite for me. I do eat yoghurt once to maybe three times a

week but the dramatic change did not come until I started the juices...almost

immediately.

Good luck in finding what works for you and stick with it.

Take care all and this includes TLC for yourself.

I've practiced yoga for more than 20 years. There are breathing

exercises that are very invigorating. I'm sure you could find some

descriptions of them on-line...cetainly in books. " Alternate nostril

breathing " is a good one.

Hi: I used to take trazadone at bedtime and it used to make me so droswy all

day. I finally got off of that. Now I take zoloft and I am much better as

far as drowsiness and depression too. Ask your Dr.

My name is . I am a member of RA Support too.

Good luck.

Hi,

For me, no one medication helped with the fatigue. It was finding the

right combination that did it. When I was on Enbrel and Humira my

joint pain improved but I was still fatigued. I had bad side-effects

with both and stopped taking them. I also take Wellbutrin XL which

may also be helping. I'm sure you've done this, but I would advise

asking your Rheumy or doctor if there is anything that would help.

Best of luck to you...

I tell my friends & family I am having a " Dercum day " and they know

what I mean now. First thing every morning when we wake up, if I

don't get up right away, Ron asks if I want him to let me sleep, and

if I say yes, he just quietly get up and shaves & dresses and goes

downstairs. At least I am blessed with the luxury of being retired

and only work one day a week, but on that one day if I am in a Dercum

day, man it's sure hard to drag myself in, so I can relate.

Last week on bowling night (yes, I do bowl one night a week, not very

well, but it's a couples' league, and mostly for fun) one of the

women looked at me and asked why I was bowling so bad, and then

said " you don't need that cane! " I wanted to hit her, but I just

ignored her. People can be insensitive when they can't really see or

feel what's wrong with you. Ron asked her if she'd ever heard me

crying at 2 in the morning, or watched me hobble to the bathroom in

the morning.

All I can say, is do your best to rest when you can, and hopefully

some day these people will understand.

Have you asked your doctor about your fatigue, Ann? Are you taking your

folic acid and are you taking enough?

How long have you been taking Trazodone? I'm assuming that you didn't

have fatigue problems since starting Effexor five years ago.

I'll tell you where to go!

That is a great article. Thank you for posting it. Fatigue is my

biggest problem right now. My mom says she gets fatigued, but not to

the point of sleep. I could take a nap every day and do when I am

given the chance. She thinks that is not normal, too much fatigue

even for RA. Who knows, but she wants me to mention it to my rheumy

next week so we'll see what he says. I remember when I was younger I

could sleep until 11 or noon on a Saturday or Sunday. Then as I got

older I would automatically wake up around 8am. I guess I've gone

full circle because I can sleep till noon again. Jennie

--- I can understand your fatigue. Hy husband tells me I am tired

more than anyone he has ever known. It does go way beyond just

taking a little nap!!! I hope your rheumatologist has some good

advice for you. Mine just tells me to pace myself and get plenty of

rest. Good advice...but not very realistic for a wife of a high-

energy husband and mother of a six year old. Good luck - Sharon

Oh... and for your mom...tell her that there is no " normal " when

dealing with a systemic illness. Maybe there is something more

going on, but your exhaustion is certainly understandable.

I feel the same fatigue that you do. I am taking Provigil for it and it helps

but I'm just less fatigued, still fatigued though. I can sleep all night and

get up and feel like I never slept.

Thanks Sharon, and I'll let you know what the doctor says. Just to

clarify, my mom is speaking as a person who has had RA for over 20

years and just in the last two years became no longer able to work

because of it. So when she says my fatigue is not normal for RA, I

think it's pretty alarming. Of course, my mom doesn't have a 4 year

old so that could easily account for the difference. I was 12 when

she got it.

She lives in a different state and it's pretty funny when we are

together now... both agreeing on what we will not be able to

accomplish in a given day, strategizing a trip to the mall so we park

as close as possible to the one store we have enough energy to get

to, etc.

That is the difference, she does not have a 4 year old! Your life is very

different and requires so much energy. A 12 year old is totally self

sufficient. She is also not working so doesn't have the daily stress of life

with a young child. I have 3 teenagers, a disabled 21 year old, and daycare

children. I sometimes thing I'm living in a fog, wondering if this is really

me.

I am sure you are right. Even though we weren't little when she got

RA, she did raise us by herself and worked full time until a year and

1/2 ago. I am sure she is forgetting all those times when she

couldn't get out of bed to go to work. I remember, it was scary when

I had just lost one parent, to see the other unable to function.

I'll have to remind her about those days. Somehow she made it

through - and back then all they told her to take for the RA was

aspirin. I can't imagine that. She had RA for 10 years before she

was put on methotrexate.

I'm so lucky compared to her though. I have access to all these

great drugs. Because she didn't, she is left with horribly

disfigured hands, wrists and feet, and is in constant pain because

she has bone on bone. Her Enbrel doesn't help that.

Sierra, I live with fatique every day, I think it's just one of the

symptoms with RA. I would sure talk to the rheumy see if there are

any idea's, take care T

Sierra,

Like RA and fibro, people like me with Dercum's have to deal with

fatigue too. Yesterday I bottomed out and slept most of the day but

today I'm feeling more like myself. I think part of the problem

comes from trying to do the things like I used to do " before " and

that makes me more tired. I started taking MSM with Glucosamine

several weeks ago and it has helped some with my energy level.

I don't think the fatigue ever really leaves, we just have to learn

how to deal with it differently. Just learn to rest when you feel

the need, and save up energy for things that you need to do.

Patience!

Thanks, . I'm off dairy products, too. RA made me examine and

overhaul my dietary habits like never before.

Three things helped with the fatigue yesterday: a visit to the

chiropractor, time spent on artwork (an activity I love), and a swim

at the YMCA (with requisite whirlpool soak and steambath). I realized

yesterday that I'm overdue for acupuncture--that really increases

energy.

Someone here wrote " Be patient, " that's advice I took to heart. I do

need to be patient and accepting of the gap between my desire to do

certain things and my actual capacity. When I posted, I had just

returned from someone's very (amazingly) clean house, and I was

feeling sort of down about not being to keep up with my housework.
